Albertus Swanepoel is on Spree

Albertus Swanepoel is a name you want hanging in your closet. This Pretoria born designer has made a name for himself on the international runways, particularly impressing with his magnificent hats. He trained under former hatmaker for Balenciaga, Janine Garlimard and since then his creations have adorned shows of Marc for Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Carolina Herrera, Jason Wu, Narciso Rodriguez and many others. This world renowned designer decided to branch out with a clothing line, launching his Spring Summer 2013 collection at SA Fashion Week earlier this year.  Now you can buy a hand picked selection on Spree.co.za, and you won’t even need to mortgage your house to do it.

His Spring Summer 2013 collection is all about casual elegance. It immediately makes me think of an expensive safari – the type Angie and Brad go on when they visit our continent. He used a lot of white and nude, with clean, simple lines that are loose fitting but still structured enough to flatter a woman’s body.

And what is coming next?

Naturally, after all the excitement surrounding his Spring Summer collection, people were quite interested to see what he had in store for Autumn/Winter 2014, which he showed at SA Fashion Week. As with his first show, he created an installation where his models stood, each on her own wooden stage, exhibiting the new line of clothing.

The clothes were a combination of casual comfort and elegance with loose tops, jogger style pants, simplistic dresses, boxy coats and chunky shoes in khaki, brown, green and camouflage prints that gave it an almost military feel. While the items had clean, minimalist lines, he paid a lot of attention to the finer details like the way the garments fold and fall over the body.

The makeup for the show was created by Revlon SA Make-up Artist Vuyo Varoyi . He wanted to create a chic girl with a casual flair; the type you would see walking in downtown Johannesburg at night, exuding confidence and a film noir feeling. ‘The soft smoky eye with its fan of cobalt blue sequined lashes is a hit, and the blackened berry two-toned mouth is gorgeous, and effortless. Just dab on the darker stain over the base colour,’ said Vuyo.
