I found six new luxury mascaras for perfectly dreamy lashes

Like a perfect pair of jeans and an LBD, I think every girl should own a great mascara. Life is simply too short for clumpy, crumbling, ashy lashes.

Mascara is also one of the hardest things to buy since you can’t always test it in store (PS: ONLY use mascara testers with disposable wands, NEVER re-use a tester mascara wand. Eye infections are a real thing), and the worst is being disappointed with your purchase.

I’ve been testing out a couple of mascaras over the last few weeks and selected my top picks. I’ve tried to keep my makeup similar in all the looks so that you can really compare the lashes, but in truth you’ll see that they’re all very close in quality. This post focusses on luxury or high-end mascaras, and I’ll follow with a budget-friendly version soon.

What do I look for in a good mascara?

A comfortable brush: One that is easy to use – so not too big or oddly shaped, and one that isn’t too hard on my lash line when I’m applying the product.

A good consistency and comb-through: The formulation shouldn’t be too wet or dry, and the brush should comb through the product properly to separate your lashes, leaving them defined, lengthened and free from clumps or crumbs.

Pitch black pigment: Never settle for anything less than the blackest black pigment.

Good wear: I expect my mascara to last all day without dusting (dropping black residue) or crumbling beneath my eyes.

No irritation: If your eyes randomly start watering or itching after applying a new mascara, it might be the product that’s causing irritation.

Easy removal: A good mascara should last all day, and come off easily at night. I always use oil makeup removers to take off my eye makeup. It is much more effective, faster, and it’s also a lot gentler to massage makeup off with an oil than rubbing it with cotton pads.

Here are 6 new luxury mascaras that I’ve been trying lately, and that have all received top marks in my book.

Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara

Lancôme makes some of my favourite mascaras so I was all kinds of excited when the new Monsieur Big collection dropped on my desk. Their latest release is all about instant volume, with carbon black pigment and a fluffy, wavy brush that beautifully separates your lashes.

The Monsieur Big collection also includes the Monsieur Big Marker to create dramatic eyeliner looks, and Monsieur Big Brow for bold eyebrows.

Elizabeth Arden Lasting Impression Mascara

Last year Elizabeth Arden stole my heart with Grand Entrance. Amazingly, I think I love their new Lasting Impressions mascara even more. The tapered brush is super easy to use for a neat application, and it gives you big, bold, glossy lashes from the first coat.

It’s more than a pretty face, though. The mascara has been formulated with nourishing ceramides, avocado and olive oils, Panthenol, as well as Vitamin C to protect, and Equisetum to strengthen your lashes.

Givenchy Noir Interdit Lash Extension Effect Mascara

If you watch professional makeup tutorials, you might have seen the makeup artist bend the wand at a 90 degree angle. This gives them a better handle on the product and neater application.

Givenchy has followed this trend with their latest mascara launch, with a wand that can bend at the head. As you remove it from bottle, simply bend the neck of the wand and it will snap into position.

While it takes some getting use to, I found this shape makes application a lot neater, and I could really wiggle the product right up against the base of my lash.

The result is beautifully defined, lengthened lashes coated in deep black pigment. The product is also super buildable so you can layer those coats to your heart’s content.

The mascara is slightly tricky to remove, but comes off fairly easily with an oil makeup remover.

Mii Full Focus Lash Duo

Got to love a two-in-one! The new Mii Full Focus Lash Duo Mascara has a dual-ended wand. The brand recommends you use the fuller, fluffy brush on your top lashes, and the thinner brush on the lower lash line. You can also swop them out, using the larger brush for full, flirtatious lashes, or the thinner brush for a cleaner, defined look. I prefer using them together, distributing product with the fluffy brush and following with the defining brush.

BlackUp Revoluption Mascara

The new Revoluption mascara from BlackUp has a slightly curved wand for easy application. I really liked the rich black pigment and the creamy formulation, which gave me punchy lashes from the first coat. It also creates a slight curl on the lash, helping to open up your eyes. I did experience some very light dusting with this mascara, but otherwise I really liked it.

Urban Decay Perversion Perversion Mascara

I seriously love this mascara. It has a thick, super soft brush that is ultra delicate on application, while at the same time giving incredible volume and definition. The creamy formulation also has a blackest black colour so you get big, bold lashes right from the first coat.

They have also added Hairdensyl to the formula, a blend of proteins that stimulate lash growth. At the same time honey extract nourishes the lashes, and marine collagen protects. It probably won’t work miracles, but hey, every bit helps, right?

Nice read! I’ve tried a few mascaras but keep coming back to good ‘ol Maybelline! My best so far is the Maybelline Lash Sensational – just love it 🙂
