Breathwork: is it the new meditation for a busy mind?

Have you heard of the new wellness buzzword, breathwork? And did you know the way we breathe can affect our physical and mental well-being?

So, what exactly is breathwork? The term describes any type of therapy that utilises breathing exercises. According to an article on Cosmopolitan, “breathing can affect everything from how you move to your moods and emotional well-being. This definitely sounds like something we should be paying more attention to.

Breathwork is super easy and convenient, it only takes a few minutes and you can do it pretty much anywhere. All breathing exercises follow the same rule of a deep breath in through the nose, and a long and strong exhale with a quick pause before taking another deep breath.

During a visit to my psychologist, she suggested I try breathwork to help with anxiety and insomnia. She suggested doing it after going to bed to make me become relaxed and sleepy, or when I have anxiety about something to help calm my nerves. It really works!

You can try her method too! It works as follows:

  • Breathe in through the nose for 4 counts.
  • Breathe out for 8 counts (focus on the stress flowing out of your body).
  • Repeat.

Not only is this technique used in therapy, during meditation and yoga, but it’s becoming more popular in digital formats too. A while ago, Apple designed an app called Breathe. The app is designed to guide you through simple deep-breathing exercises. It can also be set up to remind you to do some deep-breathing every once in a while, in the same way it reminds you to stand up at least once every hour.

Breathwork is super easy and it really works. Not only will you feel more calm and relaxed, but you’ll get a good mood boost while you’re at it!
