Life is seriously expensive at the moment, especially skincare and cosmetics. Luckily there are really great, affordable beauty brands on the market that are delivering quality products. You just need to know what to buy.
I created this easy, everyday makeup look using a few of my favourite affordable beauties.
Here’s what I used:
These are products that impressed me most in terms of the look, finish, and how nice they were to use. I also felt they lasted well through the entire day. I created the look early morning and aside from a slight colour fade in the blushers and bronzers, it was still perfect by the evening – no cracks or slippage in my foundation and no mascara smears under my eyes.
Revlon Youth Fix Fill + Blur Primer for Forehead
R199 for 14,5ml, leading department stores and pharmacies
This primer has optical diffusers and micro spheres that help to create a smooth look and prepare your skin for foundation. While this primer is technically designed for your forehead I love using it on my entire face. You might not see the effect in a mirror but try taking a selfie after using it and you’ll notice the incredible, airbrushed finish.
Revlon Youth Fix Fill + Blur Concealer in Light Medium
R199 for 3,2ml
This is a beautiful, lightweight concealer. The soft sponge tips makes for easy, smooth application and a hydrating formulation means the skin under your eyes looks firmer and softened. It’s available in 6 shades.
Garnier BB Cream for Combination to Oily Skin in Medium with SPF20
R124 for 40ml
I was really impressed by this BB cream. It blends super easily and gives decent coverage, and it has a matte finish without looking powdery or cakey. It also has an SPF 20 to protect your skin against damaging UV rays. I felt it lasted all day without cracking or slipping.
Real Techniques Buffing Brush – part of set
R449,95 for four brushes, Clicks, Foschini, Takealot and Zando
Real Techniques offers really good brushes at very accessible price points. This buffing brush is brilliant, giving quick, even makeup application and a smooth finish. I got it as part of a four piece set.
GOSH Prime ‘n Set Primer & Mattifying Setting Powder in Banana
R235, selected Truworths, Foschini and Foschini for Beauty
This is a super fine setting powder that helps to fix foundation and concealer, giving you a soft, matte finish. The banana colour is particularly ideal for people with warmer skin tones.

Catrice Eye Brow Stylist in Don’t Let Me Brown
I love the taupe brown shade of this pencil, which looks much more natural than reddish browns, particularly against light skin. It has a dual end, with a brow brush at the back to blend the pencil out, making it an ideal budget buy.
Catrice Eyebrow Filler Perfecting & Shaping Gel
Brow Gels are an optional extra but I do find they help to give more volume while keeping your eyebrows neat all day.
Maybelline Master Bronze and Master Blush Color & Highlighting Kits
R249,95 each, leading retailers
Maybelline recently launched their new Master Bronze and Blush kits and I think they’re brilliant value for money. You can play around with a variety of highlighter, bronzer and blush tones to create different makeup looks for daytime or evening.
I saw a bit of fade by the end of the day but mostly the colour lasted well right into evening. I also used these shades on my eyes – a nice hack if you don’t feel like spending on eyeshadow.
Real Techniques Contour Brush – part of set
R449 for four brushes, Clicks, Foschini, Takealot and Zando
This is a brilliant little brush for blusher and bronzer application. The shape gives you precise application and it is also brilliant for blending. You can use the same brush to apply highlighter, bronzer and blusher, just clean it on a towel between the shades.
L’Oréal Infallible 24H Waterproof Gel Crayon in Brown Crush
R159,95 each, leading retailers
These new gel crayons are so nice to work with. They glide on like a dream and deliver solid, intense pigment. Plus they stay all day without any colour fade. Nice.
essence Keep in Perfect Make-Up Fixing Spray
You don’t have to use a fixing spray but I do find it gives a beautiful finish to your look. It’s also great for touch-ups during the day. This fixing spray from essence contains hyaluronic acid and glycerin to hydrate your skin. Keep it in your handbag and spritz as needed.
Aloe Unique Spearmint Lipbalm with SPF15
You can easily turn your favourite lipstick into a tinted balm by mixing it with a lipbalm. This way you have a lighter tint for your lips but you also have the lipstick at hand if you feel like a more intense colour. This balm from Aloe Unique contains Aloe Ferox and it has an SPF 15 to protect your lips.
L’Oréal Color Riche Matte Obsession lipstick in Strike a Rose
R179,95, leading retailers
This shade is all kinds of gorgeous for spring/summer. The new Matte Obsession range from L’Oreal has a velvety look but doesn’t feel super dry on your lips. It has been formulated with camelia and jojoba oil for comfort and hydration, and it lasted really well when I applied it as a lipstick.
L’Oréal False Lash Superstar XFiber Mascara
R199,95, leading retailers
This is a dual mascara. Kick off with an intense black primer that thickens each lash to give you volume. Follow with the fiber mascara that lengthens and lifts your lashes. You can keep building with the second mascara until you’re happy with the level of drama but I found even one coat was impressive enough. It combs through beautifully to give you voluminous, defined, clump-free lashes. There was no dusting or crumbling during the day and it was easy to remove in the evening using an oil makeup remover.
