Here’s how to have a budget-friendly weekend

Is it almost weekend and you are stuck with no money? Because same! Having no money during the weekend sucks. Luckily, I have a list of ways you can have an amazing weekend, without having any money in the bank.

1. Visit a local park

Visit a nice park that is close to you with your family or friends. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a park per se, an open and pretty field will do the trick. Pack a blanket, play some good tunes, bring a snack or two and soak up the sun.

2. Have a Picnic

While you’re at it, why not pack a picnic basket for a nice brunch or lunch? Go to the grocery store and pick up a few items on sale and you’ve got a pretty cheap meal sorted!

3. Play Board Games

This is a favourite of mine and an activity that can keep you going for hours! Invite a few friends over and ask everyone to bring at least one board game they love to play. Some of my favourites are Cards Against Humanity, 30 Seconds and Cluedo.

4. Throw a B.Y.O.E. Party

Keen to hang with friends, but don’t have the cash to provide snacks and drinks? Why not throw a Bring Your Own Everything Party? Encourage your guests to bring food and drinks for everyone to share. I love having Bring Your Own Pizza Parties. Everyone likes pizza, plus it’s cheap and it feeds a lot of mouths. What could be better than that?

5. Bring & Braai

South Africans love a good braai and we’re all familiar with the “Bring & Braai”. It’s similar to B.Y.O.E Party, except there is fire. S’mores, anybody?

6. Hang out at a market

Markets are fun and can be quite cheap. Round up a few friends, get a couple bottles of wine and enjoy each other’s company while listening to live music by local artists.

7. Host a movie marathon

There is nothing better than spending the night at home with family and friends and some classic movies. Pick a genre, an actor or a few childhood favorites and watch them together. Don’t forget the popcorn! It’s essential.

8. Go Geocaching®

Download the geocaching app, available on Itunes and Google Play, and go treasure-hunting with the world! It’s a great way to spend the day getting to know your city while having an adventure.

9. Listen to some podcasts

Podcasts are perhaps one of the best free entertainment options out there and they’re free! Get comfy, get some snacks and listen to your favourite podcasts. We made a list of great podcasts to listen to here.

10. Do a Brewery or Vineyard Tour

Touring breweries or vineyards can be quite fun to do. Be sure to look out for ones that have out-of-season specials.

This option does cost a little bit of money, but it’s well worth it and since you didn’t spend money on anything else this weekend, it’s only fair to Treat yo’ Self!

These are just some ideas to help jumpstart an amazing, cheap and fun weekend. Let us know what you like to do for budget-friendly weekends. We’d love to hear from you!
