Makaron Restaurant and Majeka House in Stellenbosch are running some seriously delicious deals to kick off 2018. Their new small plates menu starts at just R460, and if you jump now you can get a brilliant accommodation deal that includes a night in the winelands and dinner.
Majeka House & Spa is situated on the outskirts of Stellenbosch and has become well known for their fine dining and gorgeous design. Seriously, this place is Instagram gold, with eclectic, whimsical decor at every turn. Think flamingo pink walls, striking wallpaper features (you’ll even be tempted to take a loo selfie), copper finishes and antique chairs dipped in cobalt blue paint. In November of 2016, this luxury small hotel was named the Best Design Hotel in Africa & the Middle East at the Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence 2017, and it is easy to see why.
Eat at Makaron
We were invited to try their new Small Plates menu. I love this style of dining, which allows you to taste a variety of dishes from the meny. You can choose to order 4, 5 or 6 small plates, with or without wine, starting at just R460.
The meal kicks off with complimentary treats, and a bread basket that treats you to South African flavours like mosbolletjies, bokkom butter, and roosterkoek with korrelkonfyt. You had me at hello.
We tried a variety of small plates from across the menu. On the starters, they’ve put a interesting twist on fresh oysters, which are served with fresh peaches and pickled sea vegetables, giving you hits of sweet and tart flavours to compliment the fat, juicy seafood. We also tried the eggplant tartare with artichoke and turnip, which has a slightly smoky quality that I enjoyed.
My favourite dish of the day was their house smoked hake, served with celeriac, dill and whey soured onions. It was delicate but punchy with beautiful sweetness and acidity to complement the delicate fish. I also really enjoyed the zucchini risotto with raw mushrooms, and cured egg yolk shavings (I know, right?!).
On the sweet side you can taste flavours like fermented blueberries with olives and olive oil – don’t worry, it sounds exotic but it is really like a fancy, deconstructed blueberry muffin. And if you like banana, go for the banana carpaccio with yeast caramel and sourdough ice cream. You’ll keep going back for more bites just to figure out the flavours.
Stay at Majeka
If you are keen to stay at Majeka, now is the time to jump – just call it a post-holiday getaway. You can get one night accommodation for 2 in a premier room, with a four course small plate dinner and wine pairing for 2, and breakfast for 2, at only R1850pp sharing. If you’re budget isn’t too tight after the holidays, I would recommend you upgrade to a Poolside Room, where you get your own private pool (filled with guilt-free water that has been bought by Majeka House). Otherwise you can still relax by the communal pool, an equally luxe experience.
Majeka House is located in Houtkapper Street, Paradyskloof, Stellenbosch. For more information and bookings, visit majekahouse.co.za
