When the new Maybelline Vivd Hot Lacquer range dropped on my desk, I was instantly excited to start playing.
This new collection has just landed in stores, promising high gloss, lacquered shine. On first sight they certainly looked tempting, with a selection of beautiful nudes, reds and deep, sultry shades. But do they live up to the promise?
There is certainly a lot to rave about with this range.
Firstly, the finish is amazing. It totally delivers on the promise of high shine, and it keeps that glossy finish until you remove it at night. The applicator is great, with a curved and pointed shape that makes precise application nice and easy. These lip lacquers also last really well. I tested Classic for a day and I only reapplied once after eating lunch. By that evening it was still pretty near perfect and I had to remove it using some makeup remover. It doesn’t fade or dull – it’s shiny and intense all the way through.
As for the shades, they’ve put together a nice selection so that most South African women should find a fit. I really like Charmer as a nude shade, with a slightly pink tint that warms it up a bit. Sassy is a hot pink that is definitely going into my bag for Spring/Summer. This one also stains your lips bright pink, so even there is a bit of wear-down at the center of your pout, it won’t be very obvious. Another favourite is Classic, a cool red that is full Old-Hollywood glam.

Most of the shades delivered really beautiful, solid colour. The only one I struggled with a bit was Slay It, which needed some working to create an even, deep colour. But as you can see it turned out really beautifully in the end.
How does it feel? My lips felt comfortable for most of the day. It didn’t dry my lips at all, and it didn’t feel tight. It does, however, feel like you have a slightly sticky layer over your lips, and if you reapply it can feel a bit thick. Try it, you’ll see what I mean. Other than than the finish is like a standard gloss with a slightly gluey quality.

Do I like it? Yes I really do. I think the colours are beautiful with vivid pigments, a solid, creamy consistency and high gloss finish that stays shiny all day. You’ll also get really long wear out of them, which means serious bang for your buck. Best of all, they only costs R149,95 each.
The Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Hot Laquers dropped in July and are available from leading retailers.
