Oh the woes of the home manicure.
First there’s the meticulous planning to find half an hour (if I’m lucky) where I won’t need to dress, go to the loo, eat, sleep, scratch an itch or leave the house.
The impossible has happened – it’s a Sunday and everyone is still asleep. Okay, here we go.
All the tools are prepped and ready – damn, where are my clippers? WHERE? Oh here.
Okay okay, cuticles first. Stab stab stab. Ouch! Never mind, that’s far enough. Now for the length. Clip clip – is that short enough? Little more? Clip clip. Too short? That’s okay, I’ll fix it with the file. Back forth back forth back forth – OUCH! Too far!
Phew! They look neat enough.
Now comes the part we all dread. The paint. Dip, blob. Ugh! Swipe swipe swipe. Nail polish runs into the freshly pressed cuticles like a river of fire. Blow blow blow! Scrape away the excess.
Review. Good, the left hand done. Now for the right.
Give the polish bottle a fresh shake, knock my hand against the table. Ring finger is destroyed! It’s the cursed nail! Dab dab dab at my nail with my finger trying to smooth it over. Sigh, I’ll come back for you later.
Now for the right hand. Dip, blob. Ugh! Okay, swipe swipe swipe. It looks a bit like a Picasso artwork, without any of the art. Never mind, the second coat will hide it. I think.
Review. Yeah, pretty good job.
Oh no! Now I need to wee! And I’m wearing jeans!
You know what’s the worst though? If, after all this, your manicure chips after just two days. And I mean, let’s be honest, you don’t want to go around caring more about perfect nails than about life! No, if you’ve finally mastered the at-home manicure, you want it to work as hard as you do.
So hands up, who wants some #LifeProofPolish?
Sally Hansen Miracle Gel suits life right from the start. It has been designed for idiot-proof painting, with a flat, broad, slightly curved brush that easily spreads out the polish and covers your nail in practically one stroke. Two coats gives you a nice, solid shade, and the gel-look top coat adds that super shiny finish. Oh, and did I mention the price (R130) is very nice too?
But what’s the real draw here? It’s pretty hard-core. I’ve worn it through our move from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, packing and stacking and cleaning and unloading and rearranging, and it didn’t chip at all. The most I saw was slight wear-down at the front and slight cracks that could easily be fixed with a fresh top coat.
So this home-manicure gives long-wear and the resilience of gel nails without the need to cure, or soak off – something I find suuuuper tedious.
On a daily basis I’m cooking, washing, tearing open product boxes, styling, gardening, fixing things around the home, putting makeup on, taking makeup off and rummaging around my bag looking for house keys. I need a manicure that can keep up.
What about you?
