A few weekends back the husband and I joined our brother-in-law and his one year old girl for an outing to Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate. Their Summer Sunday Concerts have become a seriously popular outing, with locals flocking to grab a picnic spot on the lawns and see top South African artists like Matthew Mole and Arno Carstens perform.
From the outside Vergenoegd might seem a little desolate but inside they have transformed it to a pristine farmstead where you can enjoy a variety of attractions, the most famous being their runner duck parade that sees hundreds of these birds waddle past you, a highly amusing spectacle.
The Sunday Summer Concerts go hand in hand with a festive market. The crafts and decor aren’t all that impressive but they are serving really good street food. I can vouch for the hot dogs, made with proper German sausage and served in a fresh, crispy roll with all the trimmings.
Parents will be thrilled to hear that they have a very cool setup to keep the kids entertained, with jumping castles and a variety of games to one side of the lawns. There were kids from 2 years up to 10, all having a blast. Take note that you’ll be charged per game.
Otherwise stroll through the stalls, go taste some wine, grab a cocktail and park on the lawns or at a table. It’s a super chilled vibe, ideal for a Sunday afternoon.
Tickets are available at R150 per person. Children under 10 enter free of charge. Vergenoegd wine, food and beverages will be sold at an additional cost. Gates open at 11:00 with opening performances kicking off at 12:00 and the headline band on stage at 16:00. The concerts will end at 18:00.
