Winter calls for chunky knits, coats and scarves, for heartwarming stews, and red wine in front of the fire. And with all this, I tend to reach for warm, sensual fragrances that will warm me up as I pull my scarf a little tighter against the chill.
This season there have been four perfumes that have stood out in particular. While I’m calling these winter fragrances, they certainly aren’t all only suitable for the colder months. They would all work perfectly for a glamorous evening all year round, but during the colder months I wear them during the day time too. In fact, I think the Bulgari and Salvatore Ferragamo would work from autumn through spring.
Each of these fragrances is slightly different – either leaning more towards a spicy side, showing off a softer floral base or charming you with sweet, juicy notes. Hopefully you will find something to fall in love with.
Elie Saab Nuit Noor Eau de Parfum
R2 880 for 90ml, select department stores
This is one of the most beautiful fragrances I’ve experienced this year, and if you’re a fan of spicy, oriental scents, I’m sure you’ll understand my obsession.
It has the rich spicy warmth combined with a soft floral base that makes it incredibly alluring. You will catch incense, spices and pepper balanced against rose, ylang ylang and honey – strong and yet delicate.
I’ll admit this fragrance won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. It is a standout scent; bold and brave, heady and intense. But then I think others, like me, will find it completely enchanting.
Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina Misteriosa Eau de Parfum
From R810, select department stores
This perfume is chic and playful but also sensual and mysterious. It’s for the girl who loves cocktails and night clubs, kissing tall, dark and handsome strangers, and keeping her secrets all to herself.
The first impression is sweet and juicy, driven by notes of wild blackberry and neroli. This softens to notes of orange blossom and tuberose at the heart of the scent, and finally it dries to hints of vanilla and patchouli.
Try it if you enjoy fruity fragrances, with a slightly darker side.
Bulgari Spendida Jasmin Noir Eau de Parfum
From R1500, select department stores
I love all three variants in the new Bulgari Splendida range, but this one is especially lovely if you are looking for something on the sensual side.
The Splendida collection was inspired by the Hollywood divas, from Elizabeth Taylor to Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie. So think red carpet gowns, accessorized with daring Bulgari gemstones. It’s all glamour and romance, mixed with hedonism and playfulness.
Splendida Iris d’Or shows off notes of iris, violet and mimosa, alongside warm sandalwood, giving it an overall luxurious, powdery finish. At first you get green and sunny notes, with hits of raspberry and heliotrope. This moves into a floral, velvet heart with Mimosa Absolute and Iris Absolute, and finally it settles into soft woody scents of tonka bean, vetiver and sandalwood.
If you are looking for a white floral scent with a bit more seduction, this one is a charmer.
Elizabeth Arden 5th Avenue Royale Eau de Parfum
R995 for 75ml, elizabetharden.co.za
This scent has an old Hollywood charm to it. I can just picture glamorous evening parties, with whisky old fashioned cocktails and the scent of cigars mingling with perfume.
The first experience is sweet and fruity, with notes of raspberry liqueur, Bergamot and Orange Flower. Then it moves into a warm, woody heart with notes of cedarwood, patchouli and frankincense. And finally, it dries into soft, warm notes of amber oud, musk and suede.
If you like sweet, oriental fragrances, give this one a try.
