10 times movies were spot-on about what it's like being a woman | 9Lives

This article is an answer to the countless times I’ve been asked, or rather told, by ‘mansplainers’ about what it’s like being a woman. I could go on forever about stockpiling tampons or how hard it is to shave your knee-caps, but I’d rather let some of my favourite female characters do the talking.

Here are 10 movie-favourites that capture the ins and outs of being a woman:

1. We feel you, Carrie

“I’ve spent $40,000 on shoes and I have no place to live? I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes!” – Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City

2. And I’ll just let Samantha leave this right here

“Gay men understand what’s important: clothes, compliment’s and cocks” – Samantha Jones, Sex and the City

  3. We have this condition called hangry, and it’s dangerous

“I am in a dress, I have gel in my hair, I haven’t slept all night, I’m starved, and I’m armed! Don’t MESS with me!” – Gracie Hart, Miss Congeniality

4. That time Renee Barrett said what all women are thinking

“I have a crazy idea, let’s be honest for a minute. No matter how many times we hear, ‘It’s what’s on the inside that matters,’ women know deep down it’s what’s on the outside that the whole world judges.” – Renee Barrett, I Feel Pretty

…And what about all the times our favourite series got it right

5. Like when Jess accurately described how much period pains suck

“It feels like a fat man is sitting on my uterus!” – Jess Day, New Girl

6. Or that time when she hit us right in the (boob) feels

“My boobs are loving this unemployed thing. They don’t have to go to boob jail everyday.” – Jess Day, New Girl

7. We don’t really ask a lot

“It’s all any of us wants, to find a nice person to hang out with ‘till we drop dead. Not a lot to ask!” – Lorelai Gilmore, Gilmore Girls

Being a woman - Lorelai Gilmore

8. But don’t ask us why we feel the way we feel

“I’m an individual. And I feel how I feel when I feel it.” – Hannah Horvath, Girls

Being a woman - Hannah Horvath

9. Overies before Broveries

“I support women, I’m like a human bra.” – Liz Lemon, 30 Rock

Being a woman - Liz Lemon

10. Just bring me my wine already

“I’m going to be direct and honest with you. I would like a glass of red wine and I’ll take the cheapest one you have because I can’t tell the difference.” – Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation

Being a woman - Leslie Knope

I think I speak for all women out there when I say that the best things in life will either make you fat, drunk or pregnant. So let’s face it, the struggle is real. But in the end, we can make tiny humans, have our own holiday and pay lower car insurance. Totally worth it!

Can you relate to any of these? Tell us about the time a female character was almost too relatable.

I’m the girl with the passion for traveling, meeting new people and trying new things. I don’t do small talk, or unnecessary questions; and if my face doesn’t say it, my mouth definitely will. Cute things get me through the day - I’ll go the extra mile for a puppy or any fluffy animal. If I tag you in an Insta post, you know I approve of you.
