Dead Cells
PC/ PS4/ Switch/ Xbox One

Dead Cells is an amalgamation of familiar gameplay elements. It’s a refined roguelike-metroidvania game inspired by the exploration and gradual empowerment of Castlevania and Metroid, and the delightfully difficult trial-and-error pathfinding of Spelunky.

In Developer Motion Twin’s Dead Cells, we explore an unnamed and ever-changing island as we join the Prisoner, a mysterious and immortal mass of cells capable of reanimating fallen adventurers and dungeon dwellers as hosts in a fight for freedom.

In a procedurally generated dungeon, the Prisoner must collect weapons, treasures and tools to defeat the creatures that dwell within, and with Cells, an in-game currency, unlock the power to face the Keepers.

God of War

Years have passed since the fall of the Olympian gods, as the once furious embers of vengeance which held power over Kratos, the former Greek god of war, have been soothed by fatherhood. God of War, an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio, enters the realms of Norse mythology as Kratos and his young son Atreus journey to fulfill a promise to spread the ashes of their most beloved at the highest peak of the nine realms.

Described by creative director Cory Barlog as a reimagining of the franchise, the gameplay of God of War differs from that of the previous instalments, with the brutal Blades of Chaos no longer to be wielded by Kratos as a magical battle axe, the Leviathan Axe, is introduced with an incredible display of ice elemental magic.

With combo-based combat and puzzle elements, Kratos and Atreus brave battles against mythological foes as they quest through the realms of Midgard, Alfheim, the icy Helheim, Jötunheim, Niflheim and the fire realm Muspelheim. Together they best Dark Elves, Wulvers, the undead Draugrs, as well as the mighty Valkyries in a journey that is cinematographically presented in a continuous shot, with no camera cuts or loading screens.

God of War is a masterful reinvention of a beloved series without losing the core identity of its predecessors. Receiving universal acclaim for its narrative, art direction, phenomenal visuals, character design and nuanced combat system, the epic tale of Kratos echoes from Olympus to Valhalla and claims its position heroically on my list as the greatest game of 2018.
