It’s February 14th, Valentine’s Day, and while single girls lament their solitude, and couples put a loan down on a dozen red roses, my boyfriend and I decide to avoid the love bubble by doing the opposite. It’s not that we don’t love each other, you see, it’s just that we don’t really buy into the idea of hyping this day up so much. So, whether you’re single or one half of a couple, and have decided to escape cupid and his band of bowed babies, here are some fun anti-Valentine’s day things to get up to this year.

Say “I love you” with some personalised snark

My boyfriend, let’s call him “Alex” for the purpose of this article, and I speak the same language when it comes to snarkiness and sarcasm. This year we’ve decided to save the money we would have spent on Valentine’s Day cards by making quirky, sarcastic cards ourselves! Nothing says “I love you” quite like some personalised snark.

Eat in

Nothing says “Great date” quite like waiting an hour for that romantic meal in that restaurant cramped with a hundred other hangry couples. This year I’m planning something extra special by… you guessed it, getting takeout. This is something we don’t do regularly, and this year I’ll be saving time and energy by getting a ready-made something to share.

Besides, I feel there is something poetic about saying, “I love you so much, I’m willing to share my pizza with you.”

You say it best… when you say it with a funny song

Alex and I love jamming out to tunes in the car, and the songs get bonus points if they’re a little quirky or something to laugh at. And while we’re not going to dedicate Whitney Houston’s “I will always love you” to the other, we definitely would crank up something that conveys the message with a bit of fun.

Here are a couple to get you started:

Wonderful – Toggi
You and I – Ingrid Michaelson
Loser – Julian Moon
Home – Edward Sharpe And the Magnetic Zeros
Turn – The Wombats
Anyone Else But You – The Moldy Peaches

If you would like to get more into the spirit with a Valentine’s Day themed playlist, you can feel the love with these songs.

Make their world sparkle

Now, this idea is gonna cost you a little so it doesn’t quite fit into the “no spend” theme, but the return should be great. There is a company by the name of shipyourenemiesglitter.com that will ship anyone around the world, a card with your personalised message on it, along with an envelope so stuffed with glitter it’ll make them look like a vampire straight out of Twilight. Since this company is based in the US, and we’re, well, not, it’s going to cost around R148. But I can guarantee that they’ll be thinking of you all day. And possibly also for the week to come.

Give someone else some love

Organisations like Tears allow you to make a difference to a furry being and show them some love as well, whether it’s through cat cuddling or dog walking. Personally, this is higher on my list of things to do than go watch a movie. In this way we can spend time together, get active and actually be able to have a conversation, and also be able to make a difference to an animal that needs love and affection as much as we do.

Happy hunting

I can get pretty excitable around books, especially in a second-hand bookstore where it feels like every tome has more than its own story to tell. And because my boyfriend knows this about me, he’s more than willing to be dragged into every bookstore we see. This year, we’re mixing things up a little, and we’ll be perusing the titles on behalf of the other. That means that Alex gets to pick a book for me, and I him. The goal of this is to end up with a book that you would have otherwise looked over, and you get to see how much your partner knows you and your preferences. Personally, I can’t wait to see what he picks out. We have a few personal favourite, Verbatim books here in Stellenbosch  and BookWise Book Exchange in Durbanville.

Get those hearts racing

There is nothing better than getting sweaty on Valentines Day, and no, I’m not talking about the four legged foxtrot here. I mean going for a hike, a cycle, a walk… basically anything which you ordinarily wouldn’t do, but which still gets you active. Bonus points if you get some Vitamin D while you’re at it. Again, no pun intended. For Alex and myself it’ll mean finding our gum guards and doing some Jiu Jitsu at our local martial arts gym. But we’ll be getting sweaty. Isn’t that what really matters on Valentines Day?

And if all else fails, take a nice long nap together. Do you have any “less than romantic” Valentines Day plans this year?
