At the age of 23, my drinking habits have matured a little compared to the past few years. Instead of hitting up the vodka and mix specials, I now prefer having a glass of wine or beer after work and love going to the more grown-up bars in Stellenbosch, where you can relax in a more mature atmosphere.
We have a few gem spots in Stellenbosch that are perfect for grown-up drinkers, and with it being such a small town, it’s easy to stumble into one after work.
These are some of our favourite places to head to for a drink:
Balboa Balcony Bar
With an age restriction of 23, Balboa is perfect for young adults who want to enjoy an intimate yet fun space. They are situated in Andringa Street and have a good selection cocktails, wines, craft beers and spirits.
If you enjoy live music, you’ll be pleased to find DJ nights on Wednesdays, blues nights on Thursdays and acoustic nights on Sunday evenings.
De Stomme Jonge
De Stomme Jonge is a small and cosy space on the corner of Ryneveld Street, with a great wine selection and delicious ‘roosterkoeke’.
They have a laid-back atmosphere, offering a wide selection of board-games to entertain you while you sip away on your glass of red.
Steam Restaurant Gin Bar
Situated right next to De Stomme Jonge, is Steam Restaurant, with a gin bar upstairs on a covered patio. They offer some of the best gin cocktails in Stellenbosch made with locally crafted gin or special imports, and a selection of whiskey and beers.
With an open space and loungy seats this is a lovely place to have a drink with your friends.
Doppio Zero recently launched Bar Baric, a concept-bar with a wide offering of drinks that include cocktails, G&Ts, wines, whiskeys, bourbon, cognac and more. The space is beautiful and it’s possible to order tapas from Doppio Zero next door while enjoying your drink at the bar.

Bartinney Wine & Champagne Bar
Bartinney Wine & Champagne Bar is the perfect place to go for a glass of wine or champagne. They have a bar and a few spots inside alongside a fireplace, as well as small tables on a patio outside in Bird Street to enjoy Stellenbosch’s fresh air.
The atmosphere is perfectly relaxing, and they have great tapas on offer at affordable prices.
Montegray & Independents
Next to Bartinney’s is the small and classy Montegray & Independents. With a small selection of Montegray wines as well as other independent wine labels and gin cocktails, this is a great choice for drinks after work. Read more about them in this article.
Apart from the great food experience De Wijnhuis has to offer, they are a good option if you’re feeling like a bottle of wine.
They have an amazing courtyard for those lazy spring afternoons coming up or you can enjoy your wine from a warmer spot inside. For the beer drinkers – the Darling range of artisanal beers will be your friend.
Brampton Wine Studio
Brampton is a fun wine bar in Church Street, with a selection of their own wines and delicious food. You can scribble on tables with chalk while drinking wine, which makes Bramptons feel like a grown-up kids-party.
