Gallery hopping in Stellenbosch | 9Lives
Reading Time: 4 min

As someone who is extremely passionate about all things art, nothing makes me happier than popping into galleries. There is something so alluring about experiencing the artist’s raw expression, and trying to figure out the meaning behind their visual representation.

Lucky for me, I happen to live in the scenic town of Stellenbosch, a creative hub in its own right with a wealth of galleries adorning its streets. So I decided to stroll through the streets of Stellenbosch to scout out the local talent. Showcasing a diverse range of subject matter and all conquered in equally diverse styles, the Stellenbosch art scene offers something for everyone.

So to all the art lovers out there, here are a few noteworthy stops to remember when planning your next gallery hopping mission.

Dorp Street is a good starting point:

Rembrandt Van Rijn Gallery

31 Dorp Street, Stellenbosch

Feeling nostalgic about bygone times? Greeting you with grace as you turn onto Dorp Street, the Rembrandt Van Rijn Gallery is situated in the historic Liberta Pavia Dutch Style mansions and will take you on a trip down memory lane. A place to immerse yourself in wonderment of art that played such a crucial role in shaping the South African art landscape, you can feast your eyes on world-renowned artworks created by the likes of Irma Stern, Anton Van Wouw and Pierneef.

Now, if you want to ponder a concept or get your brain ticking, the Gallery of the University of Stellenbosch is about sharing and inspiring knowledge, ideas, creativity and engaging in dialogues with the public. As a curated space to showcase the Stellenbosch University’s talented contemporary art students, you can expect immense creativity and experience pieces that are more conceptual in nature. I admire the raw nature of these artworks, which emulate something so relatable and real.

Let’s round the corner onto Ryneveld Street

Absolute Art Gallery

19 Ryneveld Street, 1st floor gallery, Stellenbosch

Another gallery to tick off your bucket list, Absolute Art Gallery displays a wealth of esteemed South Africa master and prominent contemporary artists.

Their recent exhibition, Between Figuration and Abstraction Art Exhibition, features artists Bastiaan Van Stenis, Adele Van Heerden, Leandri Erlank, Ronald Muchatuta, Marguerite Roux, Colijn Strydom, Paul Marais, Kimati Mafafo and Corne Theron, and presents an interesting and very relevant concept. The collection revolves around the revival of figure art in the digital age where the representation of the physical body (be it painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking) is incorporated with different aspects of the digital space.

Revolving around the concept of digital space – a space where virtual reality, online personas and digital media take centre stage – these artworks are social commentary on the disconnect between a culture obsessed with their devices and their physical reality.
