Now that we’re moving into winter, it’s time to crack open those bold reds. And when it comes to snug fireside evenings, a full Cabernet Sauvignon pairs perfectly. It can be intimidating to choose the perfect wine though, with so many options lining the shelves. Which one should you choose?

The 2018 Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report was recently released. This tasting saw 89 entries from 74 producers, which were tested blind by a three person panel. This year they tasted mostly from the 2015 vintage, which was described as “one of the great vintages of the modern era.” That year had winemakers all kinds of excited, with particularly dry conditions that delivered a healthy crop and powerful flavour in the berries.

The Stellenbosch wine valley dominated in the results, with 30 out of the 40 top wines hailing from the historic wine-growing region. The top rated wine overall came from Nederburg in Paarl, which scored an impressive 95 for The Manor House 2015.  The best buy is the Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection 2015, which scored a shining 93 points and retails for R139.

I’ve organised the wine by price, from those bang-on best-buys that you can enjoy tonight, to investment buys that you can keep for a special occasion. Personally I’m excited to have this list at hand.

I am a lifestyle blogger from Cape Town trying to find the best ways to spend my time, take care of my body and express myself. I am slightly obsessed with fragrances, sneakers, Jamie Oliver and Masterchef Australia. Oh, and I probably drink way too much wine.
