Treat yourself to a home pamper with these face masks | 9Lives
Reading Time: 3 min

I don’t do a face mask very often, but on days where I want to completely chill out and treat myself, I venture into my box (yes, box) full of cosmetics and grab one of my favourites.

Face masks are a fantastic way to give your skin an instant boost, whether you need to unclog pores, flash-exfoliate, calm or hydrate. It’s 10 minutes where you can kick up your feet and soak up some serious goodness. And when used regularly, they can really benefit your skincare routine.

I’ve been trying a couple of masks and found a few that are all particularly fantastic and ideal for the summer months. Take a look:

Dr. Brandt Magnetight Age-Defier

R1 488,

On the first night I tried Dr. Brandt’s Magnetight Mask and I must I say, it’s pretty damn cool!

The mask has been formulated to counter the effects of stress and environmental damage. Iron particles work to draw out toxins and daily residue while the lavender soothes the skin.

The best part of this mask was definitely taking it off. It comes with a triangle magnet that picks up the iron particles like magic – literally erasing the dark black mask as it glides over. It was so much fun and incredibly fascinating. I kept making “oooh” and “aaah” sounds while taking it off with the magnet. Even my boyfriend was impressed. And you never have to get out of bed to take it off!

This mask is really great if you’re in need of a little TLC and moisture. Once the mask has been removed, you’re left with a silky serum that makes your skin deliciously soft.

As a tip, wrap the magnet in a piece of tissue or you’ll spend ages trying to scrape leftover mask off the metal.

10/10 – would recommend.

Lush FOMO Jelly Face Mask

The next mask I tried was Lush FOMO Jelly Face Mask, which smells divine! I loved putting it on just before going to bed. The calming calamine and soothing rose extracts are exactly what every girl, and guy, needs for a good night’s rest.

Fair warning, the application process of this mask can get a little bit messy – you have to rub the jelly between your fingers to create a smooth paste. It feels nice on the skin and also doesn’t dry the skin out too much.

It washes off quickly, which I appreciated. There is nothing worse than feeling relaxed after putting on a face mask and getting frustrated because the damn thing won’t come off.

It made my skin feel really soft. I also felt super relaxed and ready for bed, but in terms of doing anything to my pores or spots… not so much.

8/10 – would recommend.

Exuviance Detox Mud Treatment

This mask is as dark as a black hole, but it’s amaaaazing! It contains a blend of Active Charcoal, Clay and NeoGlucosamine, which all work together to balance oil, clarify congestion and refine the skin.

It’s a cold mask, so it feels really refreshing – perfect for summer – and it has a nice and subtle scent.

My skin felt slightly tight after rinsing, but that’s due to the mask’s ability to remove excess oil. My skin felt clean and firm, and even my spots seemed a little less prominent.

9/10 – would recommend.

SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque

R1 150,

Now this mask was interesting! The mask contains a blend of botanical extracts, dipteptites and Hyaluronic Acid, and works to calm, hydrate and sooth reactive skin. It’s fantastic if you’ve had a chemical peel, if you’re skin is feeling a bit irritated or if you’ve spent too much time in the sun.

It looks (and feels) a bit like a melted Flubber and has a unique, yet familiar smell. It applies really easily to the skin and has a very cold temperature so it feels wonderfully refreshing. Once applied, it has a similar feeling to rubbing a block of ice across your face.

You could rinse this off after 15 minutes, or leave it on as an overnight treatment, which is a great way to really soak up all those active ingredients.

Elizabeth Arden SUPERSTART Probiotic Cleanser – Whip to Clay –

From R430, select department stores

This probiotic cleanser is left on as a 1-minute mask, during which time the mousse transforms into a mineral-rich clay. It infuses your skin with protective probiotics while the clay pulls out impurities that might clog pores.

The cleanser has the typical, subtle Elizabeth Arden smell, and feels really soft and luxurious on the skin due to the mousse’s texture.

It is easy to wash off. Once you rub it with water it transforms into a cleanser, giving you an extra wash. My skin felt a little bit dry straight after cleansing, but also soft and clean.

8 / 10 – would recommend.
