I’ve had thick hair all my life. Since this is 2018, you could even call it thicc. I’ve always struggled with taming my hair, from washing to blow-drying, to tying it up. Luckily for all my thick-haired companions out there, I’ve found some products to help tame your mane.
Kérastase Aura Botanica Bain Micellaire and Lait de Soie
Bain Micellaire R300 for 250ml and Smoothing Milk R380 for 150ml, select salons
Kérastase Paris has Aura Botanica shampoo for thick, dull and very dry hair. It’s silicone and sulfate free and its 96% natural origin formula contains responsibly sourced Brazil nut oil and Thai rice bran oil. Even with super thick hair, you only need to use a small amount of shampoo, as this shampoo foams enough to cover everything with just one squeeze. It also smells delightfully nutty!
After washing and conditioning thoroughly, the Kérastase Aura Botanica smoothing milk with Moroccan Argan oil and Samoan Coconut oil treatment smooths out any leftover frizzies like a dream! Just a pea-sized amount is enough to tame even the worst hair days! Combining the two products left my hair soft and silky-smooth with no flyaways. Bonus — my hair smelled deliciously coconutty all day!
Even though this shampoo is one of my favourites, the bottle is a bit impractical, as the shiny screw-cap top makes it difficult to close the bottle once you’ve squeezed out some shampoo in your hands- and I’m definitely not going to leave my R300 shampoo open while I wash my hair, that’s just an accident waiting to happen!
System Professional Repair Shampoo and Hydrate Quenching Mist
Shampoo R325 for 250ml and Hydrating Quenching Mist R375 for 125ml, select salons
System Professional puts together a customised routine according to your hair type and your beauty habits. So you’ll get a combo that is specifically geared for you. The Repair Shampoo smells fresh but not overpowering, which is great. I found it works especially well for damaged hair, and I could feel my hair was smoother and bouncier after using it.
After washing and drying, I applied the System Professional Hydrating Quenching Mist to my hair, which really adds a whole new level of shine and healthy glow. It can also be used in stead of a conditioner – depending on your hair – which is super convenient.
Unwined by Hask Pinot Noir Inspired Deep Conditioner and Rosé Wine Inspired Leave-in-Spray
Deep Conditioner R69,99 for 50g and Leave-in-Spray R169,99 for 236ml, Clicks
Every hour is happy hour with these products! Hask has launched their new Unwined collection, which uses a non-tipsy formula in their hair-care products. According to their website; “Wine is packed with antioxidants such as polyphenols, resveratrol and peptides to help restore strands and keep your hair healthy, strong and radiant.” I tried out the Pinot Noir Deep Conditioner and the Rosé Leave in Spray. The deep conditioner left my hair feeling smooth and silky, and the leave-in spray helped to add extra shine to my hair. The spray also offers UV protection, which I desperately need. The products have the underlying aromas that you get from wine, without making you smell like a distillery, which is always a bonus.
Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Keratin Smooth Perfect Micellar Shampoo and Conditioner
Shampoo R267 for 250ml and Conditioner R280 for 200ml, select salons
The Schwarzkopf Micellar Shampoo and Conditioner has a taming formula with Apricot Oil which instantly improved the manageability of my hair. It also tames coarse hair (which is a definite bonus for redheads like me) and helps to restore the hair structure and tame those rebellious strands. So what exactly is micellar? Basically a micelle is a molecule that works like a magnet, picking up dirt and oil from your hair, leaving it clean and silky-smooth. It offers a gentler but still effective cleanse. As a bonus, these products smell fresh and clean, and left me feeling like I just stepped out of the salon.
Invisibobble hair ties
R104 for 3, invisibobble.com
OMG has this little invention changed my life! The first time I tied my hair up with an invisibobble, was the first time I realized that I’ve had a near-constant headache for most of the day over the last 24 years. These little stretchy hair ties wrap gently around your hair, managing to tame even the thickest mane without snapping. I think if my mom knew about these when I was younger, she could have avoided so many tears (both hers and mine!). Something in the way that these hair ties wrap around your hair, prevents the weight of the hair from pulling at the roots, minimizing headaches as well. Since I discovered these I haven’t used any other type of hair tie and not a single one snapped.
