Certain familiar fragrances can instantly send you on a trip down memory lane. Whether it’s freshly baked bread or the smell of rain on a dirt road, it triggers certain emotions that we can’t always explain. But aside from these nostalgic effects, different aromas can have amazing benefits for your mind and body. This is called Aromatherapy and it’s easy to include in your day-to-day feel-good routines.
I’ve found the perfect way to relax, get inspired, or lift my mood by giving these amazing scents a try:
Kickstart your day with Citrus
When I wake up in the morning I immediately think about getting everything done. The light and energising notes of citrus can help your body get on the move, plus you get to start your day off in a great mood. I have found that aromas in candles or diffusers can be an easy way to get my daily dose of citrus. Waking up with this burst of freshness definitely helps me get out of bed easier.
Worth a try: Cowshed Grumpy Cow Uplifting Room Diffuser
With a gorgeous blend of essential oils of red mandarin, bitter orange and grapefruit, you’ll wake up feeling energised and ready for the day.
Focus better with Rosemary
Sometimes a clean and quiet office space just doesn’t seem to be enough to get you focussed. This is where the herby tones of Rosemary comes to your rescue. You can bring this fragrance into your office in many ways, like candles, diffusers or room sprays. I have found that bringing Rosemary into my daily beauty routine works better though, as I can focus better without inconveniencing colleagues who might not like the smell as much as I do.
Worth a try: TheraNaka African Vigour Body Oil
R210 for 100ml, theranaka.co.za
By massaging this Rosemary, Pine, Black Pepper and Marjoram infused oil into my neck and shoulders in the mornings, I have found that I stay focussed for longer throughout the day. As a bonus, Black Pepper is said to boost inspiration!
Use the smell of Roses as an antidepressant
The fragrance of roses has many benefits but my favourite has to be that it can make you happy. Or rather that it creates a sense of happiness. In an ideal life, I think we would all love to get a bunch of roses at least once a week. It’s not just the act that makes you happy though, the scent of roses has been proven to instantly lift your mood.
Worth a try: Lush Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner

Happiness isn’t something I want just for a certain time of day. That’s why I thought it would be great to be able to carry the fragrance of roses with me wherever I go. What better way than a Damask Rose infused body conditioner? You apply it in the shower like a conditioner to soften your skin, and the intoxicating scent will follow you all day.
Relax with Oceanic fragrances
Thinking about a summer holiday at the beach is already a relaxing feeling for me. Imagine the wonders that the mere scent of the ocean can do for your mind and body. Michele Higginson, owner and CEO of Crabtree & Evelyn South Africa, introduced me to their wonderful La Source range. “What can be more relaxing than invoking a sense of holiday, with oceanic notes, or familiar / homely notes such as fruit like apple, quince and gentle florals like wisteria and lilac,” she explained. I completely agree!

I loved that these products all remind me of the ocean in a different way, each one complementing the scent of the other. A great way to relax is to start off in the shower with the Moisturising Soap (R350 for a set of three). It’s infused with Shea Butter and will make you feel relaxed from top to bottom. The Hydra Marine Nourishing Oil (R800 for 100ml) is super versatile and is perfect for nourishing your hair, face, and body. They also have an Ultra-Moisturising Hand Therapy lotion (R120 for 25g) that is the perfect size for your handbag. The combination of these marine scents will instantly transport you to a place with a fresh breeze and salty air.
Sleep better with Lavender
I sometimes feel overwhelmed when I get into bed, thinking about everything I need to accomplish the next day. This used to seriously affect my sleeping patterns, until I was introduced to the wonders of Lavender. It relieves stress by calming your mind and body, which leads to a great night’s rest. Although Lavender is a rather common flower to find, you don’t want to buy a new bunch every week, and the dried alternative can be a messy experience. I had to find other alternatives to get my dose of lavender in the evening.
Worth a try: Africology Lavender and Eucalyptus candle
Since I am a huge candle enthusiast, I was absolutely thrilled to discover that Africology has a Lavender scented candle. If you light this candle 10 minutes before you go to bed, the combined scent of Lavender and Eucalyptus (another natural antidepressant) is bound to make bedtime a much more calming experience.
