My guide to summer moisturisers for dry skin

Here’s my dilemma: Summer means sweaty days and sticky nights, and I’m not too keen on ultra-rich moisturisers that add to that weight. But I still have dry skin so I need something that will pump up hydration while feeling light, easy and breezy.

So is there something like a lightweight moisturiser that can still work for dry skin? Up until recently most hydrating formulations were like Woolies double thick yoghurt while the gel formulas only targeted oilier skin types. But recently brands have begun launching these really appealing water gel formulations aimed at pumping up the hydra levels while giving you a light finish. My summer skincare prayers have been answered!

I wouldn’t say these are solely for dry skin, but rather any skin that needs a moisture boost – for instance those on drying acne treatments might also enjoy the texture (just stick to products made for sensitive skin).

I’ve rounded up a few lightweight moisturisers available in South Africa that will work wonders during the summer months. Spot anything you’d like to try?

Fight off pollution

Clinique Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly

From R295, clinique.co.za

Those of us living our best lives in the city need extra help when it comes to skincare. Pollution particles are little villains that stick to the skin, causing irritation, inflammation and even early ageing. This new moisturiser from Clinique helps to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier, which means the skin is better at keeping the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. At the same time the water-jelly texture means super lightweight hydration that is perfect for our hot summers.

Boost that glow

Kiehl’s Glow Formula Skin Hydrator

R660 for 50ml, edgars.co.za

So it’s post-summer holidays and we all want our well-rested, sun-kissed glow to last as long as possible. Say hello to the Kiehl’s Glow Formula Skin Hydrator. This lightweight moisturiser has been formulated to give your skin an instant luminosity, with illuminating minerals that reflect light for a subtle radiance. The effect really is gorgeous. At the same time Pomegranate Extract gives your skin a boost of antioxidants that can help to create that long-lasting radiance.

Calm dry, sensitive skin

Dermalogica Calm Water Gel

R899 for 50ml, dermalogica.co.za

I wore this hydrating gel moisturiser throughout winter and absolutely loved it. The Dermalogica Water Gel thoroughly hydrates but it has a light formula that quickly sinks away, leaving skin feeling plump but comfortable. Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin work to hydrate, while Cactus Pear Extract soothes sensitivity.

A quick pick-me-up

Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Replenishing HydraGel Complex

R299 for 75ml, foschiniforbeauty.co.za

This moisturiser has a super fresh fragrance and a slightly cooling effect that makes it seriously appealing for hot, humid summer months. If I’m dead honest, it’s not the most hydrating formulation and probably better suited to normal to dryer skins, not seriously dehydrated skins like mine, but I still found it effective and aesthetically appealing.
