A few years back I’d never admit to loving rosé. Any shade of pink meant sickly sweet flavours reminiscent of KOO strawberry jam. But pink wines, be it blush, rosé or blends, have come a long, long way, showcasing a more delicate balance of crisp acidity and floral notes to compliment the most appealing peach and soft pink hues. Today I’d happily dress my table with a number of pink wines, which look fantastic in a glass, and pair wonderfully with a wide variety of summer foods, especially sushi and salads.
We recently worked our way through a handful of wines to find a couple of favourites, and settled on these top picks.
The Cape Coral 2019 Mourvèdre Rosé 2019 by Waterkloof
R118 / bottle, waterkloof.co.za
This delightfully pale-coloured rosé features delicate aromas of pomegranates and raspberries, balanced by a lingering acidity. The fruit is gently pressed to get that light pink colour and soft mouthfeel, and the juice is left to ferment slowly in oak fermenters by the wild yeast that occurs naturally in the vineyards. It’s a gorgeous example of how refined pink wines really can be.
Leopards Leap Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2019
R55 / bottle, leopardsleap.co.za
The colour on this wine is a gorgeous soft peach tone. The palette delivers the same appeal, with bright flavours of citrus, apple, strawberry and cranberry, and soft Turkish Delight aromas.
Spier Signature Collection Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2019
R68 / bottle, spier.co.za
I just love the light salmon pink colour of this wine. It’s a perfect summer drink, bright and fresh with a floral undertone. Sip it poolside or pair it with a plate of sushi.
Boschendal 1685 Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2019
This wine delivers on appearance – the bottle is just the right kind of flamboyant – and on flavour. You’ll catch bright notes of apple and citrus, balanced by soft hints of pear and melon, and a hint of sweet strawberry.
Haute Cabriere Chardonnay Pinot Noir Rosé 2019
The Haute Cabriere Pierre Jourdan Tranquille was one of the first pink drinks I learned to love so I was curious to taste their Pinot Noir Rosé. It’s an elegant wine with hints of strawberries and rose petals on the nose, and fresh flavours of citrus, lime and melon on the palette.
