Our favourite serums to boost the skin | 9Lives
Reading Time: 4 min

So, what’s the deal with serums? While a moisturiser is just what we need to add some moisture to the surface of our skin, a serum is more like a magic skin booster. Formulated with purer, more potent active ingredients and smaller molecules that can work deep in the skin, serums can target a whole range of skin concerns, from pigmentation to blemishes, wrinkles and fine lines. For the most effective results, serums can be applied twice daily. As is an extra step in the skincare routine, it’s best to apply the serum after cleansing and toning and before applying sunscreen in the morning or moisturiser at night.

So, for the love of soft, supple skin, we added serums to our skincare journey. Take a look at this week’s roundup of serums we chose to give our skin the TLC it deserves!

Mavala Aqua Plus Mult-Moisturising Intensive Serum

R695 for 30 ml, dischem.co.za

The winter season does nothing for my skin and I’ve found it to be lacking in moisture at the moment. Not to mention that I’m noticing that my telltale signs of wrinkles are slightly more visible. So, when it came down to choosing a serum for our weekly beauty roundup, I jumped at the opportunity to try out Mavala’s Aqua Plus Multi-Moisturising Intensive Serum. A concentrated concoction of three Hyaluronic acids and Mallow Flower, this serum works to soothe the skin and infuse the layers of the epidermis with moisture and prevent water loss.

And, best of all, using this serum was an absolute pleasure! I loved how its silky smooth gel-like texture melts seamlessly into my skin, leaving it feeling delightfully soft and supple. After a few days of use, I could already see that my skin did not look and feel as dry – even on the coldest mornings! With a pump dispenser, I could also release the right amount for my face without feeling like I was wasting this precious product. All in all, this serum is definitely here to stay in my beauty cabinet this winter!

When your skin is feeling dehydrated AF, you want immediate relief and that’s exactly what I got from Esthederm Intensive Hyaluronic Serum. This serum traps water in the skin to help restore optimal hydration levels. It is also very light and sinks into my skin quickly, and this small bottle lasts a long time because all you will need is one pump.

It smells delicious and you get immediate hints of citrus and cucumber that will make you feel fresh and hydrated for a good amount of time!

Nivea Perfect & Radiant Even Tone Overnight Serum

R174,99 for 40 ml, clicks.co.za

I recently found out that I have an uneven skin tone, and since I discovered Nivea’s Perfect & Radiant Even Tone I’ve been using it every night to help reduce the appearance of my uneven skin tone. This serum includes calming magnolia (which smells amazing, by the way) and Lumicinol, which both help to reduce irregularities in the skin. The serum itself is very light and easy to apply and doesn’t leave my skin feeling as if I’ve slathered on products before bed, and when I wake up in the morning, my skin is soft, smooth and silky.

Sk.in Marvel Hydro Shot

R1 050 for 30ml, skiningredients.com

So to be very honest, it took me a while to understand the need for a serum in my daily skincare routine. After all, I already have a cleanser, moisturiser, toner…. What more do you need, right? But here’s the thing, my skin needed a little extra moisture that I wasn’t getting from my daily skincare routine.

I deal with dry and sensitive skin on a daily basis, and I constantly feel like I need to re-hydrate it. I loved the Sk.in Marvel Hydro Shot for a couple of reasons, the first being that it has ingredients that actively work to keep your skin hydrated. This includes ceramides, which are lipids that help to retain the skin barrier and retain the moisture within it, Vitamin C and E which are antioxidants, and Hyaluronic Acid Complex, a substance that helps keep your skin plump and hydrated by drawing moisture to it. The second reason why I’m keeping this serum part of my daily routine is due to the fact that it is vegan-friendly and cruelty-free. I’m really loving how fast this serum made a change to my skin, and how soft and hydrated it now feels.
