Summer smashed into us this year, wiping away any memory of snowy mountains and replacing it with scorching heatwaves that sent us to the ocean in droves.

I’m not complaining though. After a seriously chilly winter I am very much ready to get some sun on my skin. And with a new season comes a fresh selection of summer-inspired products to prep and polish my body.

I’ve put together a few of my favourites that are definitely worth introducing into your routine.

Take a look:

Nivea Q10+ Vitamin C

R99,99 for 400ml, leading retailers

Nivea Q10+ Vitamin C

I’ve always had a soft spot for Nivea body lotions. This one provides lightweight but effective nourishment (they also have a richer version if you struggle with dry skin), with a soft, clean scent. They’ve also added Q10 and Vitamin C, two powerful antioxidants that help to protect the skin and, they say, improve elasticity and firmness. I’m not saying that this will magically cure cellulite but I do love adding antioxidants into my routine wherever possible. Every bit helps, right?

Lamelle Clarity Active Body Spray

R395 for 100ml, lamelle.co.za

Lamelle Clarity Active Body Spray

We’d all love perfectly smooth skin when bikini season hits. In reality, however, hormones combined with sweat, oil and daily build-up can clog the pores on your neck, chest and back, leading to embarrassing breakouts. The new Lamelle Clarity Active Body Spray works to treat problematic patches on the body. Ingredients like Niacinamide and Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) help to fight inflammation and microbial infections, while protecting the skin against oxidative stress.

It’s been proven safe, even during pregnancy, and promises to reduce spots on the body up to 86% within 8–12 weeks.

Skinny Tan Gradual Tanner

R249,95 for 125ml, skinnytan.co.za

Skinny Tan Gradual Tanner

First off, can we get a round of applause for their sleek new packaging? No more hiding the self-tanner under the bathroom sink! Obviously, though, it’s what’s inside that counts. SkinnyTan is vegan friendly, cruelty-free and made from 99% naturally-derived ingredients. It smells like coconut oil and delivers a gorgeous, natural-looking, even tan, while Aloe Vera and nut oils condition the skin.

As a tip, always apply self-tanner with a mit (you’ll find one on their website as well). This will give you a perfectly streak-free finish. I prefer gradual-tanners, which give me full control over the final look.

Dove Invisible Dry Anti-Perspirant

R31,99 for 150ml, leading retailers

Dove Invisible Dry Anti-Perspirant

You can’t go into summer without a proper anti-perspirant. Dove has become my go-to choice this year, effectively keeping sweat and odour under control without irritating or drying out my skin. I particularly love their Invisible Dry variant, which doesn’t leave any white marks on my clothes.

Crabtree & Evelyn Citron & Coriander Energising Body Smoother

R450 for 175g, crabtree-evelyn.co.za

Crabtree & Evelyn Citron & Coriander Energising Body Smoother

Slough off dead skin with this delicious body polish from Crabtree & Evelyn. The scrub gently smooths those dry patches while Shea Butter and oils help to nourish and hydrate. I love how soft my skin feels after using this, and the smell is absolutely divine!

Always exfoliate your body before using a self-tanning. This will prevent a patchy appearance.

Optiphi Body Curve Solar Shield SPF 50

R424, optiphi.com

Optiphi Body Curve Solar Shield SPF 50

I’m a big believer in sunscreen. It’s your first line of defence against early-aging and life-threatening skin cancer, and when it comes to our harsh summer sun you really need to cover up.

The Optiphi Body Curve Solar Shield protects the skin with broad spectrum UV filters (so you’re covered against UVA and UVB damage). It also has Chromanol that protects against oxidative stress, Tripeptide-33 that fights photo-aging and free-radical damage, and Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate the skin. And they’ve included Heat Shock Proteins that help curb redness and sensitivity. Sounds like my kind of summertime superhero.
