Stellenbosch is known for its large selection of bakeries creating delicious freshly baked bread. We’ve gone around town to find some of our favourite spots to pick up a good loaf or two.
Boschendal at Oude Bank is a bakery, bistro and farm shop in the heart of Stellenbosch, providing locals with wholesome and sustainable produce. What was once the setting of the popular Schoon de Companje is now a vibrant and charming spot, priding itself on its selection of whole grain bread. Freshly baked bread is available daily at the bakery and is also available for pre-order.
Doppio Zero, a restaurant which is new to Stellenbosch has a small selection of bread, which are on display at the front of the restaurant. Although they do not have an extensive variety, they make up for it with flavour! Their fresh bread are available daily and are reasonably priced. They also like to serve their bread with a side of garlic and chilli, which I definitely recommend.
Mano’s Bakery is the best place to get wood fired artisan bread at an excellent price in Stellenbosch. The bakery uses stoneground flour, which adds a delicious punch to the bread. And if that is not enough to convince you, the hamburger buns are so delicious that they are used by restaurants like De Vrije Burger, De Warenmarkt, The Trumpet Tree, and JC le Roux! His bread can also be found at various Spar stores across town.
SCHOON Manufactory, which opened on Bird Street on 9 June, is the ultimate foodie heaven with a small café, experimental kitchen, bakery and patisserie. Inspired by a traditional French baker’s shop, their focus is on creating delicious bread, pastries and café food. Here you can enjoy the same high-quality goodies that you’ve become accustomed to at the hands of the Schoon team over the years. Not only is the spot beautiful but their baked goods and bread are mouthwatering, making it nearly impossible to choose which kind to buy!
The Open Kitchen
The Open Kitchen has been a favourite breakfast spot amongst locals. What most people do not know though, is that they bake a small selection of artisan bread daily. According to one of their bakers, the health bread is their best tasting creation and can be wrapped and stored in the fridge for up to two weeks!
Be sure to grab a loaf and let us know which Stellenbosch bakery is your favourite!
