Our favourite brunch spots in Stellenbosch

As someone who doesn’t like eating breakfast and starts feeling hungry (or hangry) around 11:00, brunch is my favourite way to start a slow morning on the weekends.

I’m also a creature of habit so I always end up going to the same spot and ordering the same meal along with my black Americano.

This year, I am adamant to try new things, so I’ve asked the team what their favourite spots are in an effort to coax myself into trying each place at least once.

These are our go-to brunch spots in Stellenbosch.

Ya Ya Café

Dorp Street, Stellenbosch

Ya Ya Café is a small, beautiful café on the corner of Dorp and Stadler Street. Although the outside area is basically on the street, this is a very relaxed part of town and has the perfect slow-living outside atmosphere I want to start my late Sunday mornings with.

I’m always torn between the eggs benedict (poached eggs, gypsy ham, spinach, with a feta and orange hollandaise sauce) and the delicious quinoa porridge (with raisins, banana and stewed apple!).

Breakfast is served all day, so you can even eat your brunch for lunch.

Bootlegger

Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch

I’ve always had a love affair with brunch. Especially when there is some good coffee involved, and even more so when there is good company involved. For these very reasons, I love going to Bootleggers in Stellenbosch.

Arriving at just past 10:30 in the morning, I sneak to their seating area at the back, order a latté (creamy, with just the right amount of coffee) and have a Green Omelette (my favourite!), while my boyfriend has the Eggs Benedict. It is the perfect Sunday treat!

Blue Crane & The Butterfly

Dorp Street, Stellenbosch

If you’re looking for the perfect brunch spot in Stellies, Blue Crane & The Butterfly has got you covered. This little coffee shop is a sweet surprise to stumble upon when wandering through Dorp Street. I paid them a visit recently and walked out completely satisfied.

Their bacon, asparagus, cherry tomato and cream cheese on toast (topped off with a poached egg – yum!) is to die for. The serving size was pretty decent and made for a hearty meal. Be sure to give them a try the next time you have the need for a good ol’ brunch.

Sweetwell

Plot 215, Raithby, Stellenbosch

Sweetwell has always been a favourite of mine for brunch, ever since I discovered their restaurant a few months ago. The restaurant is situated on Sweetwell farm, which is one of Stellenbosch’s oldest working livestock farms.

My favourite brunch item is definitely the Eggs Benedict, which includes a fresh English muffin topped with Sweetwell ham, a delectably creamy Hollandaise, a soft poached egg, baby spinach and confit tomatoes. You can definitely taste the quality of the ingredients in all their dishes, and while you’re brunching you might be approached by a roaming chicken or two!

On top of all that, they also boast a deli where you can buy fresh produce and meats for very reasonable prices, so it’s definitely worth a visit in my opinion!

The Birdcage Teabar

Aan de Gragt Building, Stellenbosch

The Birdcage is a beautiful little spot nestled away in the heart of Stellenbosch, surrounded by confectionaries that are bound to make your mouth water.

Their breakfasts are all made using Usana free-range eggs, and the choices of bread goes beyond the norm with options such as coconut, raisin rye, seed loaf or sourdough; there’s even an option to enjoy a Schoon croissant.

If you’re planning to stop by, be sure to try the french toast. It’s to die for!

Basic Bistro

Church Street, Stellenbosch

Basic Bistro is a cosy restaurant situated in the heart of Stellenbosch. Their friendly staff, quick service and excellent food makes it the perfect spot for brunch.

Their breakfast menu is filled with mouthwatering choices including french toast, croissants, omelettes and your basic eggs, bacon and toast.

The breakfasts are well-priced and the portions are more than enough. It’s the perfect place to start of your day.

Postcard Café

Jonkershoek Valley, Stellenbosch

The Postcard Café, set on the Oude Nektar Wine Estate, is the perfect place to grab a lazy brunch, or something to satisfy your sweet tooth. Whether it’s a vegan chickpea-flour pancake or a bacon, cheese and tomato omelette, there’s something for everyone at this peaceful stop.

Grab a glass of their Stark-Condé wines and settle down to enjoy the scenery, just make sure to plan your visit on days other than a Monday or Tuesday, as the Café is closed on these days.

Meraki

Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch

Brunch and Meraki are two of my favourite words. Put those two together and you get a really satisfying thumbs up from your tummy.

Meraki was the first place in Stellenbosch, that I had brunch at since I’ve moved here. Who ever thought that an eggs benedict would change the way you see brunch ever? I most certainly didn’t see that coming; all that I wanted to see coming afterwards was more eggs benedict!

A small, cosy coffee shop where you can enjoy a coffee under the oak trees of Stellenbosch!

Boschendal at Oude Bank

7 Church Street, Cnr Bird Street & Church Street, Stellenbosch Central, Stellenbosch

Situated in the vibrant hub of Stellenbosch, Boschendal at Oude Bank is my new favourite spot to have brunch. Where old-world charm meets rustic elegance, this café emulates the Boschendal philosophy of farm-to-table dining. A haven of sustainably produced breakfast and light meal options, this is where I enjoyed a delicious and wholesome Green Sarmie.

Just imagine sinking your teeth into fresh and fragrant sourdough bread, topped with rocket pesto, camelot feta, mozzarella and spinach. It’s the perfect Mediterranean inspired combination of pure goodness!

As an avid coffee drinker, I was also very impressed with their cappuccinos. And there is something so nostalgically satisfying about dropping sugar cubes into the creamy foam!
