For the last seven months or so, I’ve been on a beauty journey where I’ve become more and more aware of good skin care practices for my own specific needs; and I have developed a better know-how on which makeup products work for me. The only thing is, now that I’ve tried out a whole range of super amazing beauty products (all adorned with a nice big fat price tag of course), it’s really hard to go back to the run-of-the-mill stuff you can buy from any supermarket. So, not wanting to leave my bank account crying every month, I decided to keep an eye out for good, yet reasonably priced beauty products that I can incorporate into my beauty routine. And I was pleasantly surprised! Take a look at a few of my favourite pocket-friendly beauty finds.
Johnson’s Fresh Hydration Cleansing Micellar Jelly
R43.99 for 200 ml, Clicks.co.za
After a long day at the office, melting in this February heat, the first thing I feel like doing when I get home is to wipe my face clean. As I wear makeup most days, it’s shocking how much I spend on wipes and micellar water, both of which tend to go by way too quickly. So, a decently priced cleanser is my first priority.
I’m a massive fan of micellar water — convenient, easy to use and it doesn’t irritate my skin. So, I was on the lookout for something similar, but a cheaper option of course! I instantly fell in love with Johnson’s Fresh Hydration Cleansing Micellar Jelly, which is definitely here to stay in my beauty cabinet. Squeezing a generous dollop onto a cotton pad, its slick gel texture makes removing my makeup an absolute breeze. Afterwards my face feels fresh and supple, without that rawness that I sometimes experience when using harsher cleansers.
Nivea Daily Essentials 1 Minute Urban Detox Mask
R99 for 75ml, Clicks.co.za
I live in Stellenbosch, which is set in a basin of mountain ranges. While this certainly enhances the aesthetic of the town, it does tend hold in a helluva lot of pollution and dust from the constant stream of traffic moving through its tiny streets. So, I’m always on the lookout for beauty products to help relieve my skin from impurities and irritation brought about by environmental stressors. I adore a face mask, and it’s just what I need to give my skin an oh-so-necessary detox.
The only thing is that they can be quite pricey, especially those jam packed with all the essential goodness that the skin needs. Luckily for me, I stumbled across Nivea’s 1 Minute Urban Skin Detox Mask, formulated to remove impurities from your pores, visibly tightening them for a smoother complexion. And, it didn’t drain my bank account too much!
With a gorgeous gel consistency, the mask comes out easily from its tube, and feels lovely and cool as I gently massage onto my damp face. I simply leave it on my face for a minute and then rinse away with cold water. Voilà! My face always feels refreshed and clean afterwards.
Neutrogena Visibly Clear In-Shower Mask
R134.99 for R150ml, Clicks.co.za
As face masks are my thing, when I came across Neutrogena Visibly Clear In-Shower Mask, I just had to try it out. And its pocket-friendly price tag is well worth it! Expertly formulated to unclog the pores and with a fantastic fresh citrus scent, this face mask breathes life into my skin. After a few days of using it while showering (so convenient, right), my skin looks smoother and clearer.
Schwarzkopf Gliss Million Gloss Oil Replacement
R94.99 for 250ml, Clicks.co.za
My wild and wavy hair with its history of bleaching needs a lot of TLC, which means I’ve got to pile on the hair treatments. This of course puts a serious dent in my bank account. So, as I was browsing along the hair products aisle ready to impulse buy, Schwarzkopf Gliss Million Gloss Oil Replacement caught my eye — a product perfect for my hair needs for under 100 bucks. It couldn’t get better than that! With enriching micro-oils and keratin, this treatment is designed to keep hair sleek and maintain its natural shine. Before bed, I massage this silky cream deep into my hair and leave in overnight. I am not only sold by its amazing scent (and there was nothing better than falling asleep to the enticing fresh smell); my hair feels soft and just darn good the next morning. Best of all, the following morning I don’t wake up with a mass of knots in my hair!
Almay Shadow Squad
R149.95 for 3.5g, dischem.co.za
I generally like to keep my makeup look as natural as possible; and usually opt for a just a flick of mascara and a dash of eyeliner. Recently however, I have been seduced by eye-shadow, and I think it’s the inner artist in me. I love mixing and matching different shades, tonality and textures. For me, the Almay Shadow Squad is the most cost-effective way for me to experiment with eye shadow. With four finishes, namely matte, satin, metallic, and glitter, I can now wink an eye at any occasion. My two favourite shade options are Almay Eyeshadow Pure Gold, Baby in gorgeous shades of brown and gold; and Almay Eyeshadow Less is More in creamy white shades.
