Everyone knows that Stellenbosch is famous for its wine farms, but with most farms closing at around 5pm, us working class humans simply don’t get an opportunity to enjoy them in the week. This leaves us dry-mouthed and craving that care-free, wine-drinking feeling until the weekend. Plus craving an after-work drink sounds less like an alcoholic habit when it’s wine that you’re opting for.

So here are 5 Stellenbosch wine bars where you can relax and unwind after a long work day:

Simon Bar | De warenmarkt:

Monday to Friday 7:30am to 9:30pm; Saturday 8am to 9:30pm; Sunday 9am to 3pm

Situated in a building dating back 300 years in Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch, De Warermarkt’s Simon Wine Bar is named after Stellenbosch’s founding father, Simon van der Stel

With the choice of sitting inside or outside on one of the main streets of Stellenbosch, you can even enjoy some of Stellenbosch’s finest wines and add some tapas or oysters to go with that.

Visit dewarenmarkt.com to see more.

Beyerskloof WynBar

Monday 1:30 – 10:30pm; Tuesday to Thursday 10:00am – 10:30pm; Friday to Saturday 10:00am– 11:00pm; Sunday 10:00am – 6:00pm on Sunday

Beyerskloof wine farm, famous for their Pinotage, opened their wine bar in February 2019, blessing us with their amazing wines at cellar price.

Their rustic / vintage look gives you the feel of sitting in between the barrels, and they also offer a variety of meze and comfort foods .

Tuesday nights are also known as Tasty Cheesy Tuesdays, which offers up two sandwiches and a bottle of wine for R165, while wine tastings of nine wines for R60 are available every day until 4:30 pm.

Keep your eye on their Instagram page for more specials or visit beyerskloof.co.za.

Bramptons

Monday to Sunday 10:00am-9:00pm, with wine tasting from 11:00am-4:00pm. Open on public holidays from 11:00am-9:00pm, and closed on religious holidays.

Urban edginess meets rustic relaxation at Bramptons’ Wine Studio (aka the first cellar door in Stellenbosch). Their full of colour and flavourful wines are brought out through their vibey atmosphere.

Situated in the beautiful and bustling Church Street, you’ll experience some local talents on the street and soak in the carefree atmosphere of the after work joy.

The wine bar holds regular quiz nights and unusual wine sessions, so keep an eye on their Facebook and Instagram pages.

Bartinney Wine & Champagne bar

Monday to Saturday 11:00 am; closed on Sundays.

Another favorite wine farm of mine is Bartinney. They have done an amazing job of capturing their style on the farm and bringing it to the streets of Stellenbosch .

Celebrate a day of work with their flagship Bartinney wines, mischievous noble savage wines, Brut Savage Méthode Cap Classique, or French Champagne. They also offer a selection of meat and cheese boards

They have happy hour everyday between 4pm – 6pm where you can buy one bottle of Noble Savage Cab/Merlot and get one free or enjoy a glass of Noble Savage Brut MCC for R35.

Excited to learn more? You can visit bartinney.co.za for more information.

Montegray Independents

Monday to Saturday 11:30 am – 9pm; closed on Sundays.

Montegray & Independents is the brainchild of powerhouse couple Rose and Michael Jordaan and the sister wine bar of Bartinney wine and champagne bar.

Montegray, the new, single vineyard wine range from the winemakers at Bartinney and Independent, refers to a selection of independent winemakers whose wines will also be showcased on a rotating basis. The chic setup is every Instagrammers dream location and every wine-lover’s go-to stop.

So if Bartinney is full, just hop on over to Montegray for a vino and vibe.

So who will be joining me at these Stellies wine bars to drink away our problems in a sophisticated manner?

I have a low tolerance for heat, gluten, Tuesdays and queues. Half the time even I don't understand what I'm saying.
