It could be beneficial to quit social media, which is probably why many celebrities are deleting their social media accounts.

It’s already hard enough to keep our own social media accounts going and even we feel the pressure to keep up that Insta-lifestyle pretences. Now imagine that pressure multiplied by 100, with the eyes of the world on you, and many of those people ready to judge.

Here are five celebrities who have quit social media in 2018, as well as their reasons for it.

Miley Cyrus

In July 2018, Miley Cyrus unexpectedly removed all the content from her social media channels, prompting major speculation surrounding the topic of why she chose to do it. It turns out that Miley just needed a break, which she feels is healthy.

Taking a break from social media really could be a healthy choice, and one many of us should make. This is especially true when we feel that things are getting a little overwhelming. Sometimes we need to get back to who were are as people and remind ourselves that we are not Instagram stars.

To this day, there hasn’t been a single image posted on her Instagram.

Pete Davidson

Pete Davidson deleted his Instagram account after receiving negative comments during his romance and engagement with Ariana Grande.

Before the Saturday Night Live star deleted his account, he wrote on Instagram “No, there’s nothing wrong. No nothing happened. No, there’s nothing cryptic about anything. I just don’t wanna be on Instagram anymore, or on any social media platform. The internet is an evil place and it doesn’t make me feel good”

Many people could, and still can, relate to Pete’s reason for deleting his account. People are very quick to write negative comments about others from behind the protection of their screens, and social media does not protect people for whom these comments are intended. Not only that, social media also provides the perfect platforms on which these comments can be created and displayed.

Millie Bobby Brown

14 year-old Millie Bobby Brown deleted her Twitter account in June 2018 after she became the subject of a bizarre and homophobic meme. The memes that surfaced had homophobic comments photoshopped onto pictures and videos of Millie.

The Stranger Things actress, who is an avid anti-bullying campaigner and only 14 years old, deleted her account after these images were sent to her, and she is yet to return to the site. So not even 14 year-olds are protected on social media. It goes to show just how easy it is to bully someone on these platforms.

Kelly Marie Tran

Kelly Marie Tran, who acted in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, deleted her Instagram content in June 2018, after being harassed by “racist’ Star Wars fans.

Although Kelly never spoke out on why she removed her content, the timing of the harassment and the removal of her content makes it pretty obvious.

Kelly is yet to return to Instagram.

Selena Gomez

On 24 September 2018, Selena Gomez announced on Instagram that she would be taking a break from social media. Her post had an important message, one that everyone who uses social media should remember:

“Taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given.”

Selena also wrote regarding negative comments, and that they hurt. She cautioned, “just remember – negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.”

Currently, Selena is suffering some medical complications and is yet to return to social media.

What this article shows is that we are all responsible for how we as individuals use social media, and that the way we choose to use it can influence how others use – or choose not to use – their social media accounts.

Let’s be kind to one another, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of social media!
