“Money, Money, money/ must be funny/ in a rich man’s world!” Well, if you are a twenty-something like me and still trying to figure out this thing called adultuing, money certainly isn’t funny. In fact, it’s a struggle we face daily. And because we like to have a good time, it slips away far too quickly. So, how are we supposed to do things and experience life, if we are always strapped for cash? Well, that’s why I looked into things I could do in and around Stellenbosch that wouldn’t necessary break the bank. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised to see there are more options than I realised.
Take a look these cheap or free things to do in Stellenbosch.
Gallery hopping through the hub of Stellenbosch
For all the creatives out there, Stellenbosch is a budding art hub and a gallery hopping mission through its picturesque streets is not only wildly stimulating, it’s also free! We are spoilt for choice, with galleries showcasing a wide variety of different mediums, influences and concepts, and it’s time to get cultured. Not necessarily only a fun activity for the art snobs, be sure to pop into these Stellenbosch art galleries.
Stellenbosch University Botanical Gardens
Neethling St & Van Riebeeck Street, Stellenbosch Central
A definite must is a trip to the Botanical Gardens in the heart of Stellenbosch, which is the perfect haven to hang with your friends, especially when you are a little strapped for cash. From wandering around the flourishing indigenous plant life, passing through the cool depths of the fern forest or reflecting by the tricking ponds, to admiring the impressive bonsai collection, the gardens are truly something to behold — and not just for the nature lovers! So for just R10 (or free for Stellenbosch University students – just remember to bring your student card), find your cosy picnic spot or seat at the café amongst the trees, and wile away your weekend amongst the joys of nature.

Hike down Jonkershoek Valley
Jonkershoek Rd, Stellenbosch
“These boots are made for walking/ and that’s just what they’ll do!” Going on a hiking adventure is always a great weekend activity. Luckily in Stellenbosch we are spoilt for choice. I’m a fan favourite of the Jonkershoek waterfall hiking trails. Winding my way through the fynbos adorned trails with the trickling river below and at Twee Pieke mountains peaking in the distance, I feel as if I’m reliving a scene from Lord of the Rings. And there is nothing more satisfying than cooling off in the Waterfall pools after a sweaty hike. So, call up the gang and venture into the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve (entrance is just R40 per person) and make a day of it!
Root 44 Park Run
Root 44, Audacia Wine Farm
Kick start your Saturday morning bright and early with a 5 km trail run at 8 am— you gotta love those endorphins. Rest assured, afterwards you will feel energised and ready to take on the world. And if you are, like me, not the fittest person on earth, you can take it super chilled and walk most – or all – of the way. It’s more the fact that you made the effort to get up and do something active in nature. Best of all, it’s free to partake in the Root44 park run. All you need to do is register here: parkrun.co.za
