A couple of months ago I attended the opening of Chefs in Cape Town, a brilliant new lunch spot that impressed with fresh, delicious and expertly prepared meals served in an upmarket-canteen atmosphere. You choose from one of the three daily options, take a seat and within a couple of minutes your meal arrives.
I heroed the restaurant to my friends and colleagues, and while they expressed their interest, quite a few people told me they wish they could go for dinner. Well now you can.
Chefs is now open for dinner during the week. The same rules apply: no booking, no waiters, no menus and no tipping. Every morning three meal options are loaded onto the Chefs website so that you can think about what you are going to eat before you arrive.
“Opening at night became imperative for us after we saw how well Chefs has been received since its recent opening. We’ve been thrilled to see people queuing at the door. But because our kitchen turns it around so fast, you never really have to wait! We’re also thrilled to have been granted a liquor license, allowing us to accompany our standout meals with thoughtfully paired wine options.” says Chefs Manager, Campbell Stevenson.
The Wine List for Chefs was steered by Head Chef, Jenny Ward, who is formerly of Bizerca Bistrot. “We like to explore and support unusual varieties because it’s exciting for our patrons to try new things,” she explains.
Chefs takes a directional approach to “fast” food by making fresh, chef-led meals available quickly in an accessible, affordable and non-fuss way. The Cape Town restaurant was launched as the prototype for a global chain of outlets that will give hungry patrons what they want, when they want it. Each of the pending international Chefs will follow the same formula as the South African flagship, serving just three incredible meals per day, prepared by a chef of note.
Chefs is located at 81 St John’s Street in Gardens, Cape Town. No reservations. For more information, call + 27 (0) 21 461 0368 or visit chefscapetown.co.za.
