I'm coveting these fragrances for Christmas | 9Lives
Reading Time: 4 min

We have officially entered the Christmas season and it’s time to start thinking about gifts for those special people in your life. Personally I am a huge fan of fragrances as gifts. They are more expensive, yes, but they are also long lasting, and a beautiful scent can brighten up a day, give that spark of confidence, and make someone feel special.

I also think that choosing the right fragrance for someone takes time and attention. You have to think about them. What is their style? What makes them happy? Which fragrant notes makes you think of them? It is personal.

For the same reason choosing a fragrance for someone can be somewhat intimidating. What if they don’t like it? My tip is to start with what you know about them. What type of scents do they normally wear? Soft floral? Sweet and fruity? Spicy and oriental? Then, what type of activities make them happy? A fragrance specialist once told me that to find the perfect fragrance for yourself, you have to think about the type of places that fill up your heart. Do you love the beach or going on a hike? Then you might prefer more botanical scents. Are you a fan of cocktail parties and swanky gettogethers? Then you might prefer something fruity. You want to look for notes that take you back to those happy places.

I have selected a couple of my personal favourites, all of which would look gorgeous under the Christmas tree. I hope you find something you love.

Givenchy Dahlia Divin Le Nectar

R1 440 for 50ml EDP, Edgars and Red Square

I find this fragrance soft and sensual, with a warm, powdery finish. It opens with hints of mimosa, followed by a warm, floral heart of rose and jasmine. And finally it settles to sensual woody notes with vanilla, Tonka bean, Vetiver and sandalwood. It makes me think of broad rimmed hats, soft white linen clothing and a large sun-room filled with blooming jasmine.

Elie Saab Le Parfum Eclat dOr (Limited Edition)

R1400 for 50ml EDP, exclusive to Edgars

For Christmas, Elie Saab has released a new Collector’s Edition eau de Parfum: the Le Parfum Éclat d’Or. The fragrance is radiant and luscious with seductive floral notes. You get a hit of sweet orange on the first, followed by orange blossom, jasmin and Ylang-ylang at the heart, and finally it leaves a warm, woody linger. The iconic bottle has been transformed with gold-lacquered facets that turn the it into a sparkling jewel, finished with the glimmering clear cap. I think it is just lovely.

Giorgio Armani Si Eau de Parfum Intense Night Light Edition (Limited Edition)

R1190 for 50ml EDP, select department stores

Giorgio Armani is celebrating the holiday season with limited edition packaging for their Si Eau de Parfum and Eau de Parfum Intense fragrances. The new, limited edition bottles see the logo as though painted with light using long exposure photography. In this movement, light comes to life. The Si Eau de Parfum Intense is one of my personal favourites for a glamorous evening out. It is rich, creamy and sensual with notes of cassis and black currant blended with fresh bergamot and mandarin, and soft, silky freesia. It develops into notes of rose, neroli and osmanthus, and at the end you are left with warm patchouli, vanilla and woods.

Oscar de la Renta Velvet Noir

R1 345 for 100ml EDP, Dis-Chem

This fragrance is warm, spicy and exotic. It opens with notes of ginger, orange flower and jasmine, followed by soft notes of Turkish rose, violet and osmanthus, before settling into sensual amber, cashmere and oud accords. It makes me think of warm evening in Turkey, eating cool fruit after a day browsing the spice markets.

The Body Shop Swietenia

R500 for 50ml EDP, thebodyshop.co.za

Swietenia forms part of the new Elixirs of Nature range from The Body Shop, which are all really delicious. I was drawn to this one for the balance between fresh floral and warm woody notes. It is a beautiful fragrance to wear everyday and works well for day or night. You have a bouquet of citrus on the first, with Bergamot, mandarin and bitter orange, blended into a strong orange blossom accord. This develops to reveal notes of Mahogany and Beeswax, before settling to warm notes of jasmine and cedar.

Balmain Extatic Gold Musk

R1 195 for 90ml EDP, Foschini, Dis-Chem

Balmain is celebrating the romantic heroine with this new launch; the ultra-feminine, elegant and strong individual. I found it soft and sweet, with top notes of Bergamot and Gardenia, followed by soft cashmere and Tiare flower at the heart, and a warm linger dominated by musk and sandalwood.

Boucheron Quatre Intense Femme

R1 395 for 100ml, Dis-Chem

Firstly, I think the bottle of this fragrance is just gorgeous. The heavy glass has been coated with gold that fades to translucent towards to bottom, creating the appearance of gold evaporating into air. This fragrance is the more intense, opulent version of the initial Quatre. It opens with a soft, fruity bouquet of bitter orange, peach, red currant and pear, followed by a floral heart with Jasmine, orange blossom and rose, and finally it settles into a warm woody linger with vanilla, amber, sandalwood and musk.

I hope you find something special to treat her (or yourself) this holiday season.

I am a lifestyle blogger from Cape Town trying to find the best ways to spend my time, take care of my body and express myself. I am slightly obsessed with fragrances, sneakers, Jamie Oliver and Masterchef Australia. Oh, and I probably drink way too much wine.

  1. OMW I absolutely love Oscar de la Renta but it is not easily available in SA … for years it has been my ‘go to’ fragrance and in fact my friends use to laugh about “me and Oscar”!! Am heading down to Dis-chem soon to see what this new one is like, so excited.
