Christmas is around the corner which means one thing — festive markets! I love a good market, especially around Christmas time, since you can find the best quirky gifts! What’s not to love about winning useless prizes at the tombola table, marvelling at the uniquely South African gift tables and finishing your day off with a bazaarpoeding?

We’ve compiled a list of our favourite Christmas markets to look forward to, so get your wallet ready and make space in your bathroom cupboards for the inevitable soap gift-basket you’ll be schlepping home from the tombola table.

Suider-Strand Christmas Market, Strand

21 November – 1 December, Suider-Strand Kersmark

The Suider-Strand Christmas market is one of the oldest and longest-running Christmas Markets in the area. Pop in to the Suider-Strand Dutch Reformed Church any day between 21 November and 1 December to stock up on all your stocking-fillers! Think crafts, gourmet condiments, home-baked goodies and of course, bazaartannies cooking up a storm in the kitchen!

Stellenbosch Christmas Market, Stellenbosch

21 November – 1 December, Stellenbosch Kersmark
This ten-day-long market features over 180 stalls offering a wide variety of products, from arts and crafts to homemade goods and, of course, pannekoek. Pop in on any weekday between 09:00 and 19:00, or from 09:00 – 16:00 on Saturdays.

Boschendal Christmas Market, Franschhoek

30 November,

Do your festive shopping at the Boschendal Friday Night Christmas Market, which will take place between 18:00 and 20:00 on Friday 30 November at Boschendal Wine Estate. Enjoy an evening of live music, delicious food stalls and artisanal stands piled with fresh local produce and products. in the picturesque Franschhoek wine valley.

Lourensford Christmas Market, Somerset West

30 November – 2 December,

The signature annual Lourensford Festive Market will take place over three days on Lourensford Wine Estate. The weekend kicks off with their Friday night Twilight market, which will run from 16:00 until 21:00. On Saturday and Sunday market-goers can browse the stalls from 10:00 until 15:00, which is ample time to explore all your favourite stalls, as well as 20 additional stalls that will be set up specially for the Christmas market. Best of all, all dogs on leashes are welcome!

Vredenhof Christmas Fair, Somerset West

1 December,

The first ever Vredenhof Christmas Fair will take place on 1 December from 09:00 to 15:00 on the Vredenhof Organic Estate. Alongside the traditional market stalls, this market offers exciting entertainment for the little ones, including a putt-putt course, a hedge maze and giant chess!

Santa’s Fair, Strand

5 – 8 December, Santa’s Fair

For a fun and satisfying shopping experience, head over the Santa’s Fair Christmas Market at the Lourensriver Dutch Reformed Church in Strand! Get your hands on some traditional market-buys like decor, crafts, gourmet condiments and homemade goodies. Don’t miss out on this market, open from 09:00 – 19:00 on weekdays, and 09:00 -17:00 on Saturdays.

Stellenbosch Slow Market Christmas Market, Stellenbosch

6 & 7 December,

One of Stellenbosch’s most loved markets, the Stellenbosch Slow Market will have all the Christmas trimmings at their annual Christmas Market. Pop in on Friday between 17:00 and 22:00, or Saturday between 09:00 and 14:00 to enjoy Christmas favourites like gammon and turkey or some prime Angus steak! The usual suspects will also be in attendance, as well as some new stalls offering exciting Christmas gifts.

Gabriëlskloof Favourite Things Market, Overberg

14 – 16 December,

Take a roadtrip through the Overberg to the Gabriëlskloof Favourite Things Market outside Bot River. 45 hand-picked stalls await, offering anything and everything stylish, handmade, homemade and collectable. Why not make a weekend of it, you can bring your kids and dogs along for the fun as well! The market will take place from 17:00 – 21:00 on Friday 14 December, 10:00 – 18:00 on Saturday and 10:00 – 15:00 on Sunday.
