If you think Latin flavours have been completely lost in the Winelands – think again! The cosecha restaurant at Noble Hills Wines in Simondium launched their ‘cosecha at home’ menu last week which features a heat-at-home range. On a rainy day in Stellenbosch, we gave their menu a try – the perfect winter treat!

Mi casa es su casa

In light of current events, several restaurants have, as we know, switched to innovative ways of bringing their offerings to their guests’ homes. The heat-at-home option is a personal favourite of mine as it gives you the opportunity to not only collect when convenient, but also to serve it when you are ready.

What makes the cosecha offering so special is that it resonates the very nature of Latin food – family-style meals shared around the table with everyone assembling their own tacos, dipping a corn chip, or sharing some carrot cake. This is something that I’ve definitely been craving the last few months, the joy and communion of shared food, and even though it was just me and the hubby, it still had that Latin magic sparking conversation and laughs.

We gave their El Macho tacos a go which is a combination of their menu favourites. This includes chips and salsa, deliciously fresh guacamole, black bean salad, pork carnitas, pulled chicken rojo, slow-cooked black beans, green rice and corn tortillas. Their medium portion serves two to three people and I can confirm that the portion size will be adequate.

My absolute favourite was the chips and salsa. Their homemade chips are extra crunchy and tasty, and you constantly find yourself sneaking a few extras. Another must-taste is the pork carnitas with some apple salsa and crunchy coleslaw salad. They also have this fresh black bean salad served with a squeeze of lime and avocado.

Not really into spicy foods? Don’t fear – I am also not overly fond of hot food and found this to be perfectly balanced. A bit of spice here and there, but nothing too overpowering.

We paired the menu with Noble Hill’s Mourvèdre Rosé 2019 which is a beautiful crisp pink wine with fruity flavours and a dry finish. The strawberry, peach and cherry nose is a perfect uncomplicated complement to the Latin flavours.

The deets

The cosecha restaurant’s menu is available from Monday to Thursday for collection. They are located within the Noble Hill Wine Estate on the Klapmuts-Simondium road. You can place your order online, as well as set your collection date and time, making it super convenient, or you can phone in your order and pay at the estate.
