Chilly winter weather is the perfect excuse to indulge in some guilty pleasures, like food dipped into a pot of melted cheese. Oh yes! Delheim is once again celebrating winter with their popular Jazz and Cheese Fondue Sundays and I decided I needed to scout this out for myself.
The wine farm, which dates back to 1699, lies on the shoulder of the Simonsberg Mountain just outside Stellenbosch. It has a rustic charm to it, surrounded by vineyards and forests, with old oak trees outside and ivy creeping up the sides of the buildings.
The Sperling family has been making award-winning wine on the farm since the 1960s, and the farm-style fondue was inspired by the family’s history. The patriarch “Spatz” Sperling was born in Tettnang, a German town on the border of cheese-loving Switzerland. The family wanted to create an event that would celebrate heritage, family and hospitality, with an atmosphere that encouraged people to linger a bit longer.
The vibe is wonderful. We visited them on a rainy Sunday afternoon and the cellar was a perfect cosy escape from the cold weather, packed with laughter, vibrant conversation and the chink of wine glasses, mingled into the upbeat jazz melodies from the live band.
I thought the cheese fondue was super tasty, with a mixture of Gruyère and Emmentaler giving it a sweet and salty flavour. They’ve also added a nice selection of dipping elements like fresh vegetables, steak, prosciutto and a generous amount of bread. I did recommend they add some more sweet and fresh elements to the plate that can counter the richness of the cheese and overall saltiness of the platter. Something like grapes would work wonders to refresh the palette. Alternatively, order a bottle of their Spatzendreck Natural Sweet to pair with your platter.
Overall though it was a yummy afternoon and a fun experience.
The Delheim Jazz and Cheese Fondue costs R230 pp which includes a glass of glühwein on arrival, a shared cheese fondue platter and live music. Wine can be purchased additionally and you can also order starters and desserts from the a la carte menu.
