We are all facing some form of stress, be it pressure from your work or strain in our personal lives. And yes, we know that stress is bad for us. We’re constantly told that we should train our brains to stay calm, practice slow breathing, and exercise regularly to unwind. In reality, however, it’s not as easy to turn off that anxiety switch.

So here’s a different approach: How about thinking about stress in a positive way?

While constant anxiety can put strain on our bodies, stress can also be useful, making us more alert, focused and energised. This healthy response has been named Eustress- from the Greek prefix “eu” meaning “good”. It is placed in opposition to Distress, or that crippling feeling that makes us want to crawl into the fetal position and sleep for two days.

A healthy response to stress gives us those feelings of motivation to push with a project at work, train harder at the gym, resolve issues at home, and ultimately reach a feeling of fulfillment. I am a firm believer that we can train our thoughts, and that this has a massive impact on our everyday experiences. We can decide how to experience stress, and we can tap into it as a driving force to reach our goals.

This concept inspired the new Dermalogica Stress Positive Eye Lift (R1 210 for 25ml), a fast-acting eye treatment mask that energises the eye area and reduces the signs of stress on the skin. When you are stressed, you might experience dehydration, fine lines, puffiness and dark circles. To counter this, you need skincare that helps to strengthen your skin barrier and fight free radicals.

According to Dermalogica’s findings, if you approach stress in a positive way, it might also help aid your skin’s recovery, boosting your skincare products efficacy.

How does it work?

The Stress Positive Eye Lift has been formulated to counteract the effects of stress. It contains wild indigo seed to target dark circles, wild yeast that helps to firm and lift the skin, Arctic algae to counter puffiness and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump up your skin. It further works to restore the skin barrier and it works with your skin’s natural microbiome for optimal balance.

How to use it:

  • You’ll use this on cleansed and toned skin.
  • Apply a few dots of product around your eye area. Use the massage applicator to work it into the skin. Dermalogica has created a Eye Lift DIY guide that you can follow for optimal effects.
  • Leave the masque for 3 – 5 minutes.
  • Massage any excess into your skin or wipe it off with a tissue
  • You can use this daily or as needed to brighten your skin.

What I thought

I really enjoyed using this product. It has an instant cooling effect that I found soothing and refreshing, and after a few minutes the skin around my eyes looked plumped up.  After a few weeks of use I also felt that the fine lines around my eyes looked softer.

If you are curious about the Stress Positive Eye Lift, you can also head into a Dermalogica Concept Store for a FaceFit skin treatment. This is a 10 minute express treatment (R110) that will allow you to experience the product and massage technique first hand.

Take the Stress Positive Test

Curious to know how you react to stress? Take the Stress Positive Test and learn to look at stress in a positive light. I’m a seeker, which means I thrive under pressure and love solving problems. Pretty accurate. It’s fun, don’t worry!

I am a lifestyle blogger from Cape Town trying to find the best ways to spend my time, take care of my body and express myself. I am slightly obsessed with fragrances, sneakers, Jamie Oliver and Masterchef Australia. Oh, and I probably drink way too much wine.

  1. A warm bubble bath a good book and a glass or six of red wine, pure tranquility.

    • A walk on the beach with my husband after work is always so relaxing… Cape Town has the perfect sunsets.

      • Malherbe Liezel Reply

We are definitely lucky to live in this gorgeous place!

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

I can solve all life’s problems after the 6th glass of wine 😉 Thanks for entering!

    Dearest 9Lives

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Having said that, as a kerataconus sufferer, I have to ensure that I use products that will not irritate my super sensitive eyes. I am amped to try this eye treat from Dermalogica as I believe it will give my eye area the magic touch. So please wave that magical wand won’t you?

Now on the topic of unwinding. Mmm… let’s just say that when I am not fulfilling the duty of wife, mum, student, budding entrepreneur and pet owner, I take “me time” quite seriously. So I lock my bedroom, switch on the ipod(normally Micheal Buble) and then I sink into a decadent bath filled with popping bubbles. Ooh la la! I read my magazines whilst I am in the bath and sometimes have a glass of wine on hand. I can’t tell you how relaxed I feel afterwards only to hear, ” darling were all my socks, ” or “mum can you pour me a glass of milk” & not forgetting from my huskies who need to be fed. Now you understand why I need this eye spoil from Dermalogica!

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

I am glad you can take time off between all the hard work! Treating yourself is also important 🙂 Thanks for entering.

The guide to a successful unwind:
    – one glass of red wine…that becomes two (preferably Springfield)
    – a big bowl of rosemary salted popcorn
    – 90’s romcom (my guilty pleasure)
    – and preferably someone massaging my feet

Press repeat for every night of the week. Bliss

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

Love this! Especially someone massaging my feet every night of the week. Clearly your hubby is better trained than mine 😉 Thanks for entering!

  4. Bubbles Hyland Reply

With a busy toddler; unwinding is both necessary and difficult. The cliche is wine and a candle lit bubble bath. But I work in the wine industry so there is wine all day (I’m not complaining 😉 And there are water restrictions so a bath is filled with guilt.

So perhaps book a late afternoon facial and massage, go home and prepare a cheese platter. Open a bottle of luxurious wine. Light a fire and put on a cheesy rom com that doesn’t require a thought, followed by an early night.

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

I have to admit, cheesy romcoms are definitely one of my favourite ways to unwind! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  5. Roxanne Chutthergoon Reply

I love to unwind with a nice relaxing bubble bath whilst exfoliating my face with a nice mask, bubbly in hand and some of my fav tunes playing in the back ground.

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

Sounds soooo good! Can’t wait for this drought to end, I can’t even remember how a hot bath feels!

  6. If my brain is still working, I love to read a good book. If not, it is binge watching series. Snacks and wine with both!

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

I hear you Riétte! At the end of a long day I’ll often just veg on the couch with a good series. Anything particular you’re watching right now?

  7. I like to unwind by relaxing at Kirstenbosch gardens. It’s my ultimate quick fix – connecting with the beauty of mother nature and fresh air. At times I just lay on grass and stare up at the sky and let go. The energy at Kirstenbosch is truly magical to unwind.

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

I love that place! We are so lucky to have all these escapes in Cape Town! Thanks for sharing!

  8. Friend and/or family, a glass of wine and a hearty chat always unwinds me

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

Definitely! I love unwinding with friends and a good bottle of wine!

  9. Jacqueline Reply

Oh how I need to destress and unwind right now. My wedding is in 6 weeks time. Though Ive managed to look calm and stress free over the months, Im starting to get a bit anxious as the countdown begins so much so that i wake up several times at night. And yes the after effects can be seen the next day with my eyes looking puffy and a bit darker under. My sisters have helped me tremendously by pamper treatments and massages on the weekends but my fav thing ever is to put on my snuggly pjs, find my perfect spot on the lazy boy, pop up my feet and snuggle with a bowl of popcorn and catching up on marathon runs of my fav series. Id be so grateful to win this amazing product to look my absolute best for my soon to be husband with bright sparkly vibrant eyes as I walk down the aisle.

  11. Nadia Barnard Reply

    My way of destressing…..

This usually start on a Saturday morning at around 7:30. I get up, make myself some camomile tea. Shower, put my yoga gear on and head for the city to Yoga Life studios for a nice session of power yoga. Afterwards my friend and I meet for a fresh juice and a good breakfast at Cape Quarter.
After our vitamin boost we make our way to the Labia to watch any European film while sipping on G&T`s.
That’s an epic way of detoxing and getting a change of scenery!

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

Sounds like a brilliant Saturday Nadia! I love yoga to recenter and relax! Thanks for sharing!

  12. Sunita Theron Reply

Well seeing that I am an observer, seen in the test as well, I like to unwind by observing others. In the process I forget about how I’m feeling. Go to a coffee shop and just watching others…

  14. Marlene Olivier Reply

I guess the best times for me to unwind, would be in the bush on holiday…but that I can not do on a weekly basis, so, instead I meditate in our beautiful Lowveld garden with the best cup of tea..listening to birds singing and breathing in the most pleasant Lowveld flowers and fruit tree airomas….sitting back and counting my many blessings…that is how I roll…with and attitude of gratitude!

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

An attitude of gratitude! Yes! I must agree though, I love heading out to the Kruger for a relaxing holiday, and if that’s not possible, anywhere in nature will do.

  15. Elsandra Gouws Reply

I unwind with a hot bubble bath, a good bottle of wine, a good book and romantic back ground music, while my hubby is making my favorite pasta!

I am so envious of all these wonderful people who unwind with a relaxing bubble bath. As a busy mom of two busy boys aged 5 and 6, I kill 2 birds with one stone!! I exercise with my kids. That way I get to spend quality time with my kids and give my body a workout. So we engage in swimming, yoga, soccer, tennis or fun wrestling!!

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

Eek Asha, that can’t be easy! But well done for finding a way to unwind and bond with your boys!

  17. Watching a good commedy on TV with some of my closest friends, bowls of popcorn and a glass of wine.

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

Yes please! What’s your favourite comedy?

  18. Took the stress test and turns out that Im a seeker too. My secret to unwinding because I resolve to do it all and pretend to be super woman, is that I have a favourite drive-home cd which I play every afternoon on my way home, mixed with Jason Derulo, Avicci, Gangsters Paradise, Bob Marley Buffalo Soldier, Michael Buble, Sam Smith Stay with me, Lukas Graham 7 years, Train, Nelly Furtado Promiscuous and the list goes on. Some have me break dancing, moon walking and rapping in the car while others have me in tears like Buble’s Crazy Love when I cant deal with the pressure and demands of the day. By the time I reach home, Im almost okay. As soon as I walk in, my heels fly off my feet while I bun up my hair, light a vanilla chai scented candle, pour myself a glass of shiraz, prop my feet up and gaze out at the burned orange sky turn into different shades of pink then into deep purple and navy blue. By then the moon and stars come out to say hi to me. My favourite thing is to see the reflection of moon light on the beautiful big blue ocean. Taking in a few deep breaths of the fresh ocean breeze, then I’m 100% okay. Then its time to pop something into the oven for dinner whilst I take a quick shower. This is my routine each and every day.

    • Malherbe Liezel Reply

Sounds like you’ve got life figured out Jolene! Or at least the dealing with life bit 😉 Thanks so much for sharing!

I unwind by baking I enjoy taking out my mom’s recipe book and looking for a delicious treat to bake, the mixing, pouring, licking the bowl, then the delightful aroma from the oven. Waiting to cool the cake or cookies I baked and being creative in decorating with frosting and sprinkles Thereafter indulging in it with a cuppa tea…. It’s truly a great way to destress and escape from the thoughts of work and my studies.

  27. As a Clinical Psychologist working in a government hospital, it’s easy to feel stressed and overworked and to feel like you don’t have the time to unwind. I have learnt how important it is to unwind and relax, not only for my own well-being, but also for the well-being of my patients so that I can be totally present for them in their sessions. My favourite way to unwind is to go for a run outside and take in the beauty that surrounds me and then return home to have a hot bubble bath and a glass of wine.
