“Your Uber driver will arrive soon,” reads the message on my cell phone screen as I wait in anticipation in my house’s entrance hall. I constantly look in the big decorative mirror behind me to make sure that I look fine for this five-star event I am heading to.
“Your Uber is here.”
I lock the door behind me, get into my Uber and confirm the address: “The Vault at Taj Cape Town.” After a 30-minute drive, I am welcomed by a friendly host who guides me to the food and wine pairing with Creation Wines by Executive Chef David Tilly.
As I enter the Vault, built in the 1920s as a walk-in bank vault for the African Banking Corporation and still displaying the original colossal safe-door, I join in the elegant atmosphere. We are welcomed with our first Creation Wines wine, a Grenache, Viognier Rosé 2019. The tables are set out in the cosy space underneath the Taj, where different groups gather. Some are on dates and others are on a girls’ night, all Creation Wines and Taj Cape Town fans.
The first of the four courses is served: Sesame Tuna, Tandoori Pineapple, Avocado and Passion Fruit paired with Creation Sauvignon Blanc 2019. The Tandoori Pineapple together with the Sesame Tuna is a memorable taste and pairs well with the chosen wine.
The well trained waiters ensure that our glasses are topped up while laughter and fellowship fill the atmosphere throughout the evening. A colorful plate is placed before me, consisting of Roasted Beetroots, Smoked Goat Milk & Crispy Pork Belly, and my second glass is filled with Creation Reserve Chardonnay 2017. The creamy goat milk, beetroot and crispy pork was a fantastic melt-in-the-mouth combination.
Heading towards the middle of the evening, a berry sorbet covered in flowing dry ice is served to cleanse the palate and light the excitement. Instagram stories and cellphone galleries are filled with photos and videos of the Taj’s signature ritual.
Swiss-trained winemaker of Creation Wines, JC Martin, speaks a few words, telling us more about his wines, the origin of Creation and the vintages of this special wine. The main course is served shortly after, with Aged beef filet, Potato and Cheddar Millefeuille, Braised Kohlrabi and red wine Jus paired with Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2017.
Executive Chef of the Taj Cape Town, David Tilly, completes his fourth course by serving Vanilla Poached Pear, Cinnamon Shortbread, Dark Chocolate sorbet & caramel sauce as dessert, paired with Creation Syrah Grenache 2017.
I can relate to the joy and satisfaction of each person walking out of the Vault as the evening comes to an end. I have enjoyed every part of the evening, from the service, food and wine to the suitable venue and atmosphere.
This food and wine pairing dinner with Creation Wines has been one to remember. Make sure you do not miss out on the next five food and wine pairings to follow, paired with various wines from different wine farms such as Paul Cluver, Anthonij Rupert, Tokara, Klein Constantia and Simonsig. “Your Uber is here” reads the message on my cellphone as I walk out through the Vault’s original colossal safe-door, looking back once more to remember this evening.
