Father's Day: The recipes that remind us of our dads! | 9Lives
Reading Time: 6 min

The entire 9Lives team are big lovers of good food! And food became a big part of our day-to-day lives, from Tuesday morning brunch, creating content for food clients, or just trying out a new recipe. We even took it to a recipe Slack channel where we exchanged recipes, dishes and photos of this love of ours. We adore food because it screams celebration and we saw it fit to celebrate our dads this Father’s Day with the recipes we hold dear, that bring back memories of our dads. So come and celebrate Father’s Day with the 9Lives team and the recipes that made them fall in love with food for the first time:

If you read our Mother’s day article you would’ve spotted me saying that “I am 90% my dad’s daughter with a sprinkle of my mom.”  And this relates to eating habits (and unfortunately metabolism). Our love of all things carbs, ice-cream and fruit are only a few examples.

To be honest, my mom is the main cook in the family, but my dad does have some signature dishes that will always remind me of him. The main one being a fruit salad. No more than three days will go by without there being a fruit salad ready for breakfast. During the holidays our ritual is usually a morning coffee, then a dip in the ocean and then back home for a lekker fruit salad brekkie.

It sounds like an easy dish doesn’t it? Well it probably is, but damn Will-factor knows how to perfect it. He calls it his artwork. I’m sure he’s been through all the fruit in a fruit salad, and eventually came to the conclusion of the do’s and don’ts.

Keep in mind fruit salad is a “personal preference” dish and you can make it with anything. I don’t think it will ever flop. But here is the right way.

So hierdie Vadersdag, deel ek graag met jou my erfenis en my pa in die vorm van my ouma se kroketten resep!

The smell of charcoal brickets, onions frying in a black potjie pot, chicken, veggies, a simmering stew that will be served with fluffy white rice. The sound of lions roaring in the distance and hyenas barking next to the fence of the Kruger National Park campsite. Red dust fills the air, mingling with the sweet, cool evening. These are the sounds and smells that will always recall my fondest memories with my dad, standing by the fire in a warm jacket, a beanie pulled over his ears.

Whenever I catch a smell of a potjie being started, these memories flood my vision, bringing back a sense of serenity and safety in the presence of my father.

My dad isn’t much of a cook. He once added muesli to his spaghetti bolognese and to this day I am still traumatised by that! When thinking of the type of food that I associate with my dad, I automatically think of my grandmother’s cooking: delicious and wholesome. I remember eating bowls of soup with my grandfather, grandmother, dad, and sister as we sat watching episode-after-episode of National Geographic. This quickly became our winter tradition.

Although we cannot perform this ritual anymore, every time I eat this soup I am reminded of those times and just how much I love my dad. I hope this soup recipe fills up your belly and heart as much as it does mine.

My pa se antwoord was elke aand dieselfde, “net wat jy wil, jou pa eet enigeiets”.
Hierdie sin som eintlik my pa so goed op.

The VaaIie girl with a laugh better than the joke itself. If you’ve lost me in the crowd, look for the red hat. Or the shoulder pads. Or the floral-patterned blazer. I’ve got a winner of a party trick, just give me a shot of tequila and a raw egg, and if you’re not sure how to start the conversation, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.
