There is something magnetic about a man who smells amazing. When he passes you in the street and his fragrance lingers in his wake. When your head rests on his chest and the scent radiates from his warm skin. When you press your lips against his neck and catch it on the curve of his collar bone. For me, buying my man a beautiful perfume is just a little selfish, because when you think about it’s the one who gets to smell the scent on him who finds the most pleasure.
As we’re approaching the festive season I thought I would share a few new fragrances I absolutely love on my man. Go ahead, spoil him (and yourself) a little.
Dunhill Icon Elite
(R1 595 for 100ml eau de parfum, Foschini, Red Square, Stuttafords, Truworths, Dis-Chem & Clicks)
Dunhill is gentlemen’s brand, drawing on a 120-year old British heritage. It is striking and sophisticated from the first impression: the weight of the bottle in your hand; the texture of the diamond pattern on the sides beneath your fingertips, the cool feel on your skin. The fragrance itself is fresh, bold and powerful as a confident man in a fine suit. You’ll get cardamom and black pepper, sage and juniper, with wood and suede on the finish. Delicious.
John Varvatos Artisan Aqua
(R1 195 for 75ml eau de toilette, select Edgars stores)
This premium male fragrance brand launched locally this month and I am completely in love. The packaging won me over long before I experienced the scent (which totally lived up to expectations). Each bottle shows creativity and craftsmanship. The Artisan Aqua, for instance, draws inspiration from the Mediterranean coast and has a hand-woven rattan cover rounded off with an antique-feel engraved tag and cap. The fragrance a gorgeous blend of citrus, spice, herb and woody aromas. It opens with citrus notes of mandarin, tangelo and paradisamide, followed by a herbaceous heart with notes of sage, lavender, coriander, basil and jasmine. And finally at the finish you get cool moss, sweet patchouli and fresh fir balsam.
Zadig & Voltaire This Is Him
(R845 for 50ml eau de toilette, Woolworths)
I’ve been completely mesmerized with Zadig & Voltaire since I got my first whiff at the official launch party a few months ago. This Is Him is absolutely delicious and intriguing, with hits of spicy incense, grapefruit, black pepper and vanilla, and soft sandalwood at the base. It’s sophisticated and also pretty rock n roll, just like the fashion house that it stems from. Something clean but also dark and mysterious. The bottle is equally striking, taking its inspiration from contemporary art with a minimalist, black and white design; and a puzzle piece side that fits into the feminine This Is Her version.
The Body Shop Red Musk
(R300 for 60ml, thebodyshop.co.za)
Okay so technically this is a female fragrance but in truth it easily works as a unisex scent. It’s bold and spicy with strong hits of tobacco, cinnamon and pepper. Buy it for him and wear it yourself. I think that sounds like a win win situation.
Armani Code Profumo
(R1 231 for 60ml, select department stores)
This is the latest men’s fragrance from Armani and it simply oozes seduction and sophistication. The bottle is simplistic with a thick, heavy glass base that gives off a warm amber glow. When I first received it I expected a heavier, spicy scent but it has a good balance of fresh, vibrant notes to lift the scent. You’ll find mandarin, green apple and cardamom on the top, orange blossom, lavender and nutmeg at the heart, and warm tonka bean, amber and leather on the linger.
Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit L’Homme L’Intense
(R1 585 for 100ml, Edgars, Red Square, Foschini, Stuttafords, Truworths & Woolworths)
This fragrance is for the man driven by the rhythm of a city at night – neon lights, the beating sounds of music and the game of seduction. It is fresh, captivating and sensual and I would say a perfect match for warm summer evenings. You’ll get violet and iris floral notes on the first, with vanilla and sage at the heart, and a sweet woody base dominated by patchouli and tonka bean.
