South Africa is one of the most interesting places in the world, so why not lift a glass and cheers to all the weird, wonderful and wacky bars in South Africa? Here are the 6 unique bars in South Africa that are most definitely on my beer radar:

The Highest Pub in Africa | Sani Pass, KwaZulu-Natal

Let me tell you about one of the best kept secrets in Africa. It is called The Highest Pub in Africa and is situated on the border between South Africa and Lesotho. This pub is a must if you want to call yourself a pub crawler. The pub is perched 2874m above sea level, but once you are up there, you can soak up the mountain views with a drink in your hand. It will take you up to 2 to 3 hours to get to the highest pub in Africa, so you have to indulge in their delicious food. The ingredients are locally sourced from the community. You can only visit this pub by 4×4 so start making friends with the Land Rover species.

The Panty Bar | Paternoster, Western Cape

Everyone will tell you that a trip to Paternoster isn’t a trip if you didn’t enjoy a beer at the famous Panty Bar. The ceiling is strung from left to right in panties. From full on granny panties to lacy g-strings. It’s weird, it’s funny, some would even call it eye candy!

The Panty Bar is situated at the Paternoster Hotel and you can grab a beer while enjoying… well, the view! If adventure is your middle name, you can also add to the collection. It started in 1974 and is still going strong.

Ice Station 2720 | Tiffindell Ski Resort, Drakensberg

When walking into the Ice Station 2720, the first thing that you will notice is the sign above the pub entrance that reads “Unusual Fun Adult Behavior Allowed”, which I’m sure will give you a bit of a giggle, and  attract some visitors. The pub dares its visitors to try their famous “Upside Downers”. You can drink these “downers” or shooters while hanging in ski’s from the roof. Ice Station 2720 is taking down, down down to a new level! (Literally!)

The Real Hennie’s Sports Bar | Pretoria, Gauteng

Put together beer, tjops and rugby and what do you get? The Real Hennie’s Sports Bar! RadioRaps, comedian and just all-round funny guy opened this sports bar and named it after his dog Hennie. Because if Hennie’s boss is happy, then so is Hennie!

The sports bar was inspired by the gees at Loftus Versveld and the incredible bars RadioRaps saw in Dallas. But this sports bar has rules and if you don’t obey these rules, someone will blow a whistle to call you out on your bullshit. (BUFFALO!)

Ronnie’s Sex Shop | Route 62, outside Barrydale

From Hennie all the way to Ronnie! Ronnie’s Sex Shop is every Instagrammers dream, and all their followers’ hell. But let’s be honest, who wouldn’t stop at a shop with a name like that?

You can grab an ice cold beer in the warm Karoo while enjoying a pub lunch at the Roadkill Cafe. Ronnie’s Sex Shop is a Karoo treasure and is loved by many. Come Thirsty!

Fokof Bar | Pretoria, Gauteng

No introduction needed. Fokofpolisiekar opened their own bar in Pretoria called Fokof Bar. A trip down memory lane is what you’ll get as you’re heading up the stairs thanks to photos, lyrics and newspaper headlines of the bende plastered on the walls. This is a bar full of insanely good music, a menu that is well… full of fokken baie burgers and sides, and if you live by being Dagdronk, then this is the place where you should grab a few beers!

So there you have it, these are the unique bars where you will find me with an ice cold Zamalek in hand. At what unique bar will you be?

The VaaIie girl with a laugh better than the joke itself. If you’ve lost me in the crowd, look for the red hat. Or the shoulder pads. Or the floral-patterned blazer. I’ve got a winner of a party trick, just give me a shot of tequila and a raw egg, and if you’re not sure how to start the conversation, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.
