Each city has its own fashion flavour. My favourite city style must be that of New York, where everyone looks like they just walked out of a shoot or from set (let’s be honest, there’s a good chance they did) and they just know they live in one of the coolest places on earth. Omygawd how I swooned over the coats those people wore.
I might have fallen for urban style in New York but I do also adore our local flavour. Jozi for me is filled with incredible pattern and print, slick suits and dapper gents kitted out from their hats to their socks, and there is just so much personality and sass packed into each outfit.
Cape Town again has adopted this casual meets chic sportswear trend that I am absolutely in love with. Whenever I walk to work in the mornings I enjoy people-watching to pick up style tips from the early birds having breakfast meetings over coffee and croissants, catching the buss or running to class.
The style I enjoy most is one that borrows from the comfort of athletic wear, reworked into everyday style – like wearing a tailored jacket and skinny jeans with a pair of sneakers, or leggings and Chucks with a trench coat and beanie. Go very glam and you can refer to it as sports-luxe. I like the term athleisure.

Sneaker culture is such a big thing at the moment and I can not be happier about the fact that comfortable shoes are all the rage right now. Upon that so many styles I adored as a teen have made a comeback and you can now invest in brilliant cult classics that have been revamped for our era. Brilliant.
I took inspiration from this trend for my latest fashion post. The idea for the look really started with a pair of Spanx I got a while back. These are all sport-inspired but they also have that Spanx shape-wear magic that tucks and smooths all the lumpy bits. Love. At first I wanted to take them for a run but I later realised they actually earn their price tag as a brilliant pair of everyday leggings. I love styling them with sneakers and a loose sweater, or like I did below.
One tip I need to give when it comes to the Spanx is that you have to put them on like you do stockings – you kind of roll it up – so that it sits properly around your curves. I also went for a medium size at first but because I have quite a small middle I later exchanged it for a small and that suited me better. So make sure you get the size right – the peeps at Inner Secrets Lingerie are great at helping you make the right choice.
When it comes to sneakers I am personally having a moment with white adidas – just like so many other people. They have been massive all last season and they continue to dominate. Because of the popularity it is also basically impossible to get a size 5 or 6 so you’ll be happy to know that Zando has just gotten new stock. Whoop.
I have to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Paul Lotter for helping me out with the shoot. I had a blast working with you. Head over here to check out his Instagram feed.
I would love to know what you guys think of the look.
