Talking makeup & beauty with Lucoh Mhlongo

I caught up with Elizabeth Arden celebrity makeup artist, Lucoh Mhlongo to chat about his passion for makeup, his top tips and tricks, and what beauty means to him.

Why do you love makeup?

Makeup is not only about covering up; it’s about personal expression and it is truly an art. When done right, makeup has the power to elevate our confidence and to have such a positive impact on how we interact with the world on a daily basis. When you look beautiful, you feel beautiful and you walk with power. That’s what I love about makeup.

In your opinion, makeup should be used to…

Makeup should be used to cover what we absolutely need covered and accentuate what we really want to accentuate, such as our favourite features. I believe makeup should be used to enhance, rather than transform.

Every woman is different and unique, and that’s the most beautiful thing of all, isn’t it?

What is a makeup question you get asked a lot?

The question I get asked a lot is ‘How do I get the perfect eyebrows?’.

I always tell women that eyebrows act as a frame on the face, so it’s important to know where they start and where they end. When filling in with a pencil, keep the pressure soft as you don’t want them to look dark and waxy but rather light and fluffy with natural and believable texture. They must look like they belong to you!

Are there any makeup trends you’re particularly excited to try out?

I’m in love with movement in makeup right now: It’s all about light and bringing light to the face. It’s fresh, it’s youthful and luxurious.

There is a sophisticated approach to makeup now that is based on texture. The skin is alive, with foundation that offers coverage but leaves a soft luminous finish.

Subtle highlights on the high points of the face catch and reflect light, almost making the skin look like porcelain. There isn’t too much focus on sharp contours but rather we treat it as a soft shadow that lands on the face. It’s all about the light.

For you, what is a woman’s most attractive feature?

For me these differ from woman to woman. She could have beautiful eyebrows that frame her face perfectly, or eyes that are like windows to her soul. Perhaps luscious lips with a beautiful Cupid’s bow. Every woman is different and unique, and that’s the most beautiful thing of all, isn’t it?

What does the word “Beautiful” mean to you?

The word ‘Beautiful’ to me as an artist means something that inspires and moves me to create. I express my art and my passion through makeup. ‘Beautiful’ can be a woman’s face, a sunset, autumn leaves blowing… The moment my spirit is moved to create I know I’ve seen beauty.
