The best way to explore Cape Town is on foot.
Park your car and stroll through the CBD, along the promenade or through the V&A Waterfront, and stop at tiny restaurants for coffee, craft ice cream, cocktails and all sorts of delicious, creative dishes. The best places are often those you’d miss if you whipped past in a car.
For this reason, you’ll find that most Cape Town locals opt for sneakers. Aside from being fiercely cool and comfortable, they’re also wonderfully practical to get about quickly.
This weekend we had one of those absolutely perfect spring days in the city and decided to play tourist at the Waterfront – the perfect excuse to break in my new Levi’s Katy sneakers (R699) from their Spring Summer Collection.
The V&A has seen massive expansions over the last few years and I actually prefer skipping the main building and strolling through various extensions. Grab lunch at the Market on the Warf, browse local designer fashion at the Watershed, and head to the Silo district for some art and epic sundowner spots.
We grabbed lunch at the Market, followed by some insanely good Speculoos ice cream from Unframed, which tastes like spiced cookies. It’s sooo good.
With the sweet tooth satisfied, we strolled over to the ZEITZ MOOCA, the Museum of Modern Contemporary Art that recently opened at the Silo district. If you haven’t been, it is definitely worth a visit. I would also recommend joining a guided tour, which will give you much better insight into the artworks on display.
Our art outing was followed by drinks on the roof of the new Raddison Red, a very cool new spot with a vibrant, artistic decor style, swimming pool, and a view that stretches all the way from Table Mountain to the Waterfront.
My best way to end a weekend is with a stroll on the Sea Point promenade. On a good day you’ll find all sorts of people – runners, cyclists and skateboarders, people walking their dogs or playing soccer on the grass, families having picnics, and kids climbing over the various art sculptures. I love the community feel, and the incredible views as the sun dips into the water.
So next time you’re in the city, put on your most comfortable kicks and go for a stroll. It’s the very best way to soak up summer.
