When I was a kid, whenever I’d go shopping with my mom she’d ask one crucial question: “What will you wear that with?” As a snotty teenager I would roll my eyes because “ugh, I just, like, wanted it, okay?!”
Now I build my wardrobe entirely around that question, always thinking about how a piece will add to what I already own. If you shop smart, one purchase can revive your entire closet. I will invest in a few core staples that I know will merge easily into my current collection, and then find a few stand-out items that can give any look a bit of spirit.
Over the last few weeks I’ve found a couple of items that really enriched my summer wardrobe. The first is a pair of Green Cross Mocassins in Camel (R 1 299, greencross.com). They’re ridiculously comfortable, and they are so easy to wear: Paired with some skinny jeans, a shirt dress, or like I did here with shorts and a light blouse.
Another brilliant investment was this Ella Rose Waist Tie Belt I found at Poetry Stores (R250, poetrystores.co.za). I use it to cinch in my shirt dresses and kimonos, and even transform scarves into chic tunics.
As for clothing, I’m a huge fan of the current Comfortable Chic look dominating the stores, bringing in looser fits and luxe fabrics. I love pants and shorts with volume at the bottom, and a high waist. This maintains a nice silhouette with plenty of room for movement. The ones here are Edition at Woolworths (R199, woolworths.co.za)
I’m also loving loose, flowing blouses in fabrics like linen, soft cotton, rayon or viscose. These have a super soft feel against my skin and they’re breathable, making them ideal for summer. You can find a wide range in store, but don’t forget about vintage shops. Here you’re bound to discover gems like the one I’m wearing in these pics, with intricate lace detailing. They don’t make’m like this anymore.
