Finding new, small spots to have a glass of wine in Stellenbosch always excites me! There’s something special about the combination of a fireplace, some wine and good company to bring a relaxing end to the day. So, needless to say, when I heard about the new wine bar in town, I was eager to try it out.
Montegray & Independents is a trendy wine bar that recently opened right next to Bartinney Wine & Champagne Bar on Bird Street. They offer a selection of wines from Montegray Vineyards, as well as other small independent producers that are sourced on a bi-monthly basis, according to a certain theme – The Berrio, Fable Mountain, Driehoek, Sijnn and Domaine des Dieux – are all excellent features on the wine list, currently under the Far and Beyond theme.
We headed over after work this week for some Grenache, which was everything a glass of red should be. Chenin Blanc, Grenache Roussanne, Syrah and Petit Verdot are the other available Montegray wines. They are set at R180 per bottle and R45 per glass.
For gin lovers, they have a variety of fynbos-infused artisanal gin cocktails. The Gin Mojo, made with Autumn gin, mint, citrus, ginger, rose geranium and juniper, mixed with hibiscus tonic didn’t disappoint! It was super fresh and had the right balance of fruity and dry flavours.
Montegray & Independents also offers a small selection of delicious tapas with suggestions of an accompanying Montegray wine. The bobotie spring rolls paired with the Syrah is highly recommended. They are delicious and can even be considered a light meal as it’s decently portioned for only R49.
If you’re looking for something lighter, try the King prawns served with wasabi mayo. It’s fresh and crispy and pairs perfectly with their Chenin Blanc.
The cosy, small space is beautifully decorated and has a welcoming, homey feel to it. Their service is excellent and their staff are friendly which adds to the welcoming vibe. They also have a fireplace, which is a big plus during winter!
Montegray & Independents is the perfect spot for after-work tapas and wine. We had a great experience and will be heading back soon for another glass or two.
