Looking for the next big series; a.k.a. life after GoT

Since Game of Thrones has ended there seems to be a distressing silence from epic fans across the globe. While half suffer from mild PTSD, as none of their favourites survived the journey to the Iron Throne, the rest have newfound commitment issues from the unsatisfying end of the last ten years’ Westeros journey.

We, therefore, understand that you are wary of giving your heart to another epic series, but not too worry. We have rounded up our favourite series, old and new, for you to binge, love and, most importantly, commit to.

True Blood

Season 1 to 7 now streaming on Showmax
I’m not shy to admit that I love everything vampire. I was a teenage girl in the Twilight era and till today I am #TeamEdward. I love the lore surrounding vampires and more importantly, I love how every universe sets its own rules for the undead. In that sense, True Blood is very unique as it imagines a reality where vampires walk among us.

The series is based on novels by Charlaine Harris, which are most definitely worth the read. The novels, as well as the series, is known for its steamy Southern Noir and not only includes vampires and their lore, but also werewolves, fairies and more. I’ve indulged in this series over the years, rewatching parts here and there, and I’m still in love with its characters, setting and plot. And yes, I cried during the finale. #SorryNotSorry

The Umbrella Academy

Season 1 now streaming on Netflix
If you are looking for an immersive new universe to sink your teeth into, look no further than the Netflix Original, The Umbrella Academy. The series revolves around a family that has once again been brought together by a tragic death. The family as a whole is quite dysfunctional, but let’s face it, which family isn’t?!

Often comedic, together with a few tragic, dramatic moments, this series will not only have you choosing a favourite family member to back, but it’ll also have you totally immersed in the mystery, family dynamic, as well as the weird and the wonderful. A second season is rumoured to be in the works so now is a good time to get up to speed on the Hargreeves family.

Parks & Recreation

Season 1 to 7 now streaming on Amazon Prime Video
If you are absolutely sick of dramas, epics, fantasies and other GoT-like series, why not try out a super wholesome family-friendly comedy that’ll have you laughing out loud? Parks and Recreation is such a favourite of mine that I consciously try to avoid it, and only watch it on special occasions!

Leslie Knope is one of the best characters on modern-day television. Her wit, her courage, her innocence and all-around outlook on life is so refreshing that you’ll struggle to find any other series like it. At first, the format of the series can be quite confusing but once you get used to it, you’ll love the off-camera commentary and frank look into life in the Parks and Recreation department.

Mindhunter

Season 1 now streaming on Netflix
So, if you’ve got murder on your mind after that insanely unsatisfying finale, why not give Mindhunter a go? This series dives deep into the psyche of serial killers and investigates the term ‘serial killer’ as a whole. Set in the 1970s, this series takes quite an unnerving look into the world’s most disturbed minds.

I personally loved the performance and character arc of the main character, Holden Ford, portrayed by Jonathan Groff. He enters the force as a rookie investigator and quickly gets caught up in this intense line of research and questioning. It might be a good idea to watch this with a friend as it gets very creepy!

The Bachelor South Africa

Season 1 is now streaming on Showmax
Sick of all these fantasy series not living up to the hype? Just switch to reality television. All the drama of The Bachelor US is nearly doubled in this South African rendition of the popular reality show. Lee Thompson, fitness model and entrepreneur, has the ladies swooning in this very first season.

Probably the best part of reality shows is the fact that it requires very little investment from your side. I like to put it on in the background while cooking or cleaning and listening to the drama play itself out in the background – true bliss!

Downton Abbey

Season 1 to 6 now streaming on Amazon Prime Video
Ready to bury the hatchet yet, and commit to a new family and new series? They even have a film on the way! Tune into Downton Abbey and meet the Crawley family. In the early 1900s, they face change from every side as they enter the new century and have to survive the Great Wars, family wars and other tribulations.

Fair warning, this series is extremely addictive. If you are into period dramas in any shape or form, Downton Abbey will leave you binging all six seasons within a month. I’ve literally shouted at the television as I’ve become immersed in the lives of Mary, Sybil, Violet and Edith Crawley.

Still haven’t found something that suits your fancy? Try Breaking Bad (Netflix), Vikings (Showmax), Homecoming (Amazon Prime Video), The Sinner (Netflix), Luther (Showmax) and American Gods (Amazon Prime Video).
