I love my morning get-me-ready for the day ritual, where I make sure my skin is refreshed, well-moisturised and my light application of makeup is on point (our appearance is important, right?). But what about getting my night-time skincare routine in order? Am I doing enough to prep my skin for all the activity that takes place while I sleep — making sure a full-days worth of makeup, dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells has been removed so that my skin can breathe and absorb my moisturiser’s nourishment?
Yes, there are times when I collapse into bed after a night out or a long busy day and am too sleepy (or lazy) to wash and prime my face properly. You will probably agree that there is nothing worse than going to bed with traces of makeup — the next morning my skin feels itchy and just plain horrible. For this reason, I’ve compiled a few night-time skincare essentials for healthy, glowing skin.
Team Dr Joseph Gentle Makeup Remover
R320 for 50ml, futurethis.co.za
Giving my skin a chance to breathe while I sleep is super important, which is why I need to cleanse my face properly before bed. Using an oil-based cleanser is a great way to remove oil-based makeup as well as dirt that accumulates on the skin throughout the day. An oil-based cleanser may not be everyone’s cup of tea; and I agree that using oil is not ideal for our sweltering hot summer season. However, I like the idea of soaking my skin with oily goodness before bed, rather than stripping it of its natural oils.
A new favourite of mine: I fell in love with Team Dr Joseph Gentle Makeup Remover. Dabbing a dollop of this liquid gold onto a cotton pad, I gently wiped it over my face, watching the oil instantly combine with my makeup, lifting it off my skin. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my face did not feel too oily and sticky afterwards – the texture of this cleanser is more dry-oil like (if that makes sense) — the liquid absorbs seamlessly into my skin, only leaving behind a light residue.
Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Micellar Water
R275 for 400ml, eucerin.co.za
Now it’s time to double up the cleansing to wipe away residue oil and any lingering trace of dirt or makeup still clinging to my face. This ensures a clearer, more luminous complexion. For this purpose, micellar water has become my go-to option. Not only is micellar water super convenient, it also takes its job seriously, where the dynamite micelle molecules join forces to draw away impurities from the skin’s surface. I found Eucerin DermoPURIFYER Micellar Water a great product in this regard and it is now my bedtime essential. While it has been formulated for oily skin, the formula was still mild enough for my sensitive skin, and cleansing my face was such an easy and pleasant experience. I simply soaked a cotton pad with this micellar water and bathed my face clean, leaving it feeling refreshed and soft to the touch.
Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel
R1 495 for 10 30ml tubes, dermalogica.co.za
Our skin’s ability to renew itself is often damaged by factors such as bad lifestyle habits, environmental stressors and, well, ageing. As someone in my early twenties, noticing the early tell-tale signs of fine lines, I thought it would be a good idea to slot in a proper skin exfoliation into my night time routine. Removing a build-up of dead skin cells not only maximizes absorption of moisturisers and targeted skincare products, it also works wonders at improving the skin’s appearance — softening lines and wrinkles, and bringing new, stronger skin to the surface.
Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel is just what my night-time skincare regime needed, with a combination of exfoliating Alpha Hydroxy Acids, enhanced with Pumpkin Fruit Enzyme and Rice Bran extract to renew the skin and sort out signs of ageing.
I kickstarted my exfoliation journey by using one 30ml tube per three consecutive nights; and will now continue to use the remaining seven tubes on a weekly basis. The experience was altogether quite simple — I simply squeezed the contents of the mini tub into the palm of my hand and massaged the cool liquid gel over my face and neck. It is recommended that the peel is left on for approximately 3-7 minutes. I found an average of 5 minutes about right for me. As is my experience with most chemical exfoliants, there was an initial tingling and tightening. This however subsided almost immediately and I am still blown by how soft and smooth my skin feels and looks. It’s truly amazing what a good skincare product can do to transform your complexion.
Elizabeth Arden Retinol Ceramide Capsules
R965 for 60 capsules, elizabetharden.co.za
I’ve been meaning to give Retinol a go for some time. It’s such a power ingredient when it comes to kicking those skin cells back into action. The only thing that held me back is that this super antioxidant tends to cause dryness in the skin (and I already have somewhat dry skin). When I heard Elizabeth Arden had introduced their Retinol Ceramide Capsules, I literally jumped to give it a try. Captured in single-dose gel capsules, this Retinol serum not only works wonders at smoothing out fine lines and restoring the skin’s youthful radiance; it is also enhanced with Ceramides 2 & 3 which reinforces the moisture barrier of the skin.
Retinol is easily compromised by sunlight and air exposure. With the Retionl Ceramide Capsules, the serum is sealed airtight capsules, so the punch of the retinol is preserved and is proven to be 76% more effective. Since Retinol can cause sun-sensitivity, I use this serum at night (as long as I wear sunscreen the next morning, I should be good to go). Each capsule delivers a single dose. I simply twisted off the top of the capsule and squeezed the clear liquid gel onto my fingertips, massaging it onto my face and neck. I loved the smooth and slick consistency of the serum, which absorbed effortlessly into my skin, leaving no oily residue. Soft and supple to the touch, my skin felt well-moisturised the next morning.
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion
R570 for 125ml, clinique.co.za
With a dry-combination skin type, there are times when my skin craves oils for the love of a glowing dewy complexion. This is when I need the magic of a good moisturiser. Even for those with oily skin, it’s super important to moisturise at night to hydrate and lock active ingredients into the skin while you sleep. Designed for skin types ranging from super dry to dry combination, the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion is formulated to maintain an optimal moisture balance in the skin, strengthening the skin barrier, locking in moisture and enhancing a youthful glow. It’s my definite go-to moisturiser, with a silky soft texture and a light and easy-to-apply, quick absorbing consistency. I loved how I could feel my skin drink in its goodness, leaving my face soft to the touch. Now, I was confident my skin was happy, healthy and ready for the night.
