Cape Town has welcomed a really interesting new foodie spot to the CBD. NOW NOW is the latest venture by Woolworths, serving up delicious, healthy, fast foods including breakfast pots, egg buns, hearty bowls and burgers.
The idea is to help people make the most of their pre-work breakfast stops or lunch breaks – most people only have an hour for lunch and you really don’t want to spend that precious time queuing for food. So many people opt for quick, junk-food joints in town (especially since the more trendy spots cost a small fortune these days).
At NOW NOW you can order and pay using their app (available free on IOS and Android), so that by the time you reach the counter you can simply grab-and-go. Yup, you order and pay beforehand so that you only have to pick up at the shop – no need to queue. And even if you haven’t planned ahead, they have made the order and payment system quick and efficient with card machines on your side of the counter so that you can swipe it yourself.
You’ll also be happy to hear that while this is fast food, it is made with freshly sourced, sustainable ingredients. The globally-inspired menu includes wraps, bowls, pots and buns, as well as gluten-, dairy- and wheat-free options, too.
Breakfast options include The Bircher Pot, a mix of organic rooibos, Bircher muesli, double-cream yoghurt, apple juice, cranberries and toasted seeds. I tried The Flapjack Pot, with bite-sized flapjacks covered in yogurt, fynbos honey, blueberries and toasted seeds. It was so yum!
If you feel like indulging a little, they also offer a range of buns and hot pot breakfasts. Try The Bacon Bun made with bacon, free-range egg, slow cooked tomato sauce and baby spinach, sandwiched between two lightly toasted English muffins. Veggie option? Go for The Avo Pot, a combination of avocado, Rosa tomatoes and basil pesto.
I was there for breakfast but their lunch menu sounds equally brilliant, offering dishes like The Moroccan Lamb Bowl with free range lamb meatballs, shashuka sauce, double cream yogurt and pomegranate. They also recommend The Chicken Sriracha Wrap made with free range chicken, sriracha mayonnaise, avocado and salad leaves. Or try The Quinoa Green Salad with free range chicken or local oak-smoked trout, red & white quinoa, avo, peas, brocolli, toasted seeds and a miso dressing.
As for the caffeine fix, NOW NOW is serving up really tasty, 100% locally roasted, organic African beans, which you can combine with Ayrshire milk or unsweetened almond milk. They also offer a range of juices, smoothies like The Creamy Red One or The Chocolate one, and juicy “shots” like The Spinach One, The Ginger Cayenne One, and The Rooibos One.
Best part? The price. You can get a meal for as little as R25 (hey, if you’re really broke you can even get butter on toast for R10). The portions are small but decent, and should be perfect for a light breakfast or lunch.
Capetonians can visit the flagship NOW NOW outlet at 91 Longmarket Street from Monday to Friday, 06:30 – 17:00. Breakfast is served till 11:00. According to Woolies more stores are set to follow soon.
