Reading Time: 4 min

Winter is here, and not just in Game Of Thrones! Hand creams have once again found a home in the handbags and backpacks of the 9Lives team. Here are our favourite hand creams for keeping our hands and nails soft, smooth and in great winter condition:

Team Dr Joseph Daily Cellular Protection Hand Cream SPF 10

R275 for 50 ml, futurethis.co.za

During the dry cooler months, I find that my hands crave extra nourishment, moisture and care, especially before walking to work on icy cold mornings. There is nothing worse than trying to type with chapped, dry hands! A new favourite of mine, Team Dr Joseph Hand Cream is just what I need to protect my hands. Enhanced with active plant extracts and SPF protection for those sun rays (that are still potent during the winter months), this hand cream leaves my hands feeling beautifully soft and supple. And its creamy consistency is quick absorbing so that my hands don’t feel too sticky or oily afterwards. I also love the fact that its scent was not too overpowering – fresh, subtle with a slight floral undertone.

Lush Handy Gurugu Hand Cream

R165 for 100ml, za.lush.com

I’ve never really been one to use hand cream, but Lush’s Handy Gurugu hand cream changed all that! It’s made with lots of different butters, including shea, peanut, cashew and almond butter, blended with pumpkin seed and rose water infusions. Evening Primrose oil calms the skin, and chamomile blue oil adds an extra dash of antiseptic properties.

I’ve been using this religiously since I got it, and I can feel the difference in how soft my hands have become, even during the changing weather, which usually leaves my hands chapped and dry.

Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream

R59 – R93, luckyvitamin.com

I recently had the amazing opportunity of attending the launch of Burt’s Bees in South Africa, and can I just say, I absolutely love their products. This lemon butter cuticle cream is no exception. With citrus lemon peel oil, limonene and a whole bunch of really amazing natural products, this cuticle cream is a lemony delight. Honestly, it makes my mouth water just smelling it.

I’m really hard on my hands, and I don’t really use hand creams as often as I should, which often leads to really rough and grown-out cuticles. Not pleasant. This cuticle butter has made a world of difference, and I keep the little tin in my handbag wherever I go. Because it’s a butter and not a lotion, I don’t have to worry about getting it everywhere. I also absolutely love that the products are natural and animal friendly.

Aloe Unique Hand & Nail Cream

R36 for 30ml, aloeunique.co.za

What goes hand-in-hand with winter? Dry and chapped hands. So it was time to give my hands some much needed TLC!

The first thing that I do when I open a new product is smell it. From the get-go, you can smell the freshness of the Aloe Ferox plant! The blend of vitamin A, B, C & E restored my dry hands, making it feel soft and smooth. I’ve used it regularly since I’ve received it and I can feel and see the difference on my hands. I like the 30ml size, because you can pop it in your handbag and it doesn’t take up too much space. Aloe Unique Hand & Nail Cream is affordable and you can go a long way with only 30ml!

Crabtree & Evelyn Energising 60 Second Fix for Hands

R850 for Citron & Coriander Hand Therapy 100ml, and Citron & Coriander Hand Recovery 100g, crabtree-evelyn.co.za

My cuticles are always in a state! I therefore immediately grabbed the Crabtree & Evelyn Energising 60 Second Fix for Hands when we decided to try out hand creams. It is a hand recovery and hand therapy in one box! This citron and coriander (which smells amazing, by the way) kit is a convenient spa fix in a box. The hand recovery is a scrub and what I liked about it is the fact that it is a coarse scrub and you do not need to use a lot to cover both your hands. Another thing I liked is the fact that it doesn’t leave your hands sticky. I immediately followed the scrub up with the hand therapy lotion and where the scrub exfoliated, the hand recovery lotion soothed and left my hands feeling amazing! The lotion is filled with lovely shea butter and it has this amazing peppery coriander scent – I literally cannot stop smelling my hands. Now I just stick the little box in my handbag and use whenever necessary. I’ve even used the scrub without using water to wash it off, as the scrub absorbs into the skin and together with the lotion, it gets rid the grainy particles and just leaves you with super smooth hands.

The VaaIie girl with a laugh better than the joke itself. If you’ve lost me in the crowd, look for the red hat. Or the shoulder pads. Or the floral-patterned blazer. I’ve got a winner of a party trick, just give me a shot of tequila and a raw egg, and if you’re not sure how to start the conversation, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.
