This season I am all for effortless fashion. I want clothes that have a casual and chic appearance, silhouettes that drape loosely yet attractively, and fabrics that are breathable for the balmy summer months. I’m aiming for a wardrobe that works together, so that putting together a comfortable and elegant outfit becomes quick and easy, built out of key pieces that will outlive seasonal trends. Well, this is the dream.
This week I attended the launch of the new Poetry SS17 collection and the new range falls neatly into my fashion philosophy. “We envisioned a greenhouse filled with greenery and flowers in full bloom, a sense of calm in the midst of our chaotic lives,” says Mari Lochner, Poetry Buyer.“As days get hotter and we enter high summer, we increasingly want clothes that are comfortable, feminine and above all effortless.
“We also noted the growing resistance to previous seasons’ focus on fast fashion and heeded shoppers’ demand for quality items and classic cuts that will last for many seasons to come.”

This season the cuts and styles are classic, with vibrant tropical prints, stripes, delicate florals and striking graphic designs that are spot on trend. At the event these bright colours and patterns were showcased alongside muted tones, including pure white, leather, natural linen, faded copper jewellery and woven hats. Where previous seasons saw clashing prints and colour blocking, I sense a move towards a calmer appearance.
I love the silhouettes in the collection. You’ll find plenty of A-line dresses with a slight flair, carefree off-the-shoulder tops and flowing maxi dresses with a light, Boho feel.
The range also caters for formal occasions with lace and embroidered dresses, and you’ll get your fix of denim and leather jackets as well.
In terms of accessories you’re in for a treat. This season shoes include the must-have espadrille, tassel sandals (swoon!), lace ups, wedges and block heels. Alongside these you can dress up your look with hand-illustrated scarves, bold jewellery pieces showing off rose quartz or dusty black gems, and a range of beautiful leather bags to round things off. And if you love local you’ll be happy to know that Poetry produces 90% of their leather bags in South Africa.
Take a look at a few of my favourite pieces spotted at their recent media event.
The entire spring/summer offering will be available in Poetry stores and at poetrystores.co.za from October 2016
