Taking a look into probiotics

Personally, probiotics is a term that only recently made its way into my vocabulary. Until this year, the only time I’ve heard about probiotics was when I was told to drink them after taking antibiotics. Needless to say, I had no idea why it was so important.

Probiotics and its link to gut health has increasingly become an important topic of discussion. We are constantly reminded about how important it is to include probiotics in our diet on a regular basis.

So, from somebody who has very little knowledge on the matter, I decided to dig into the topic.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are microorganisms that form a community in your digestive tract. They are the “good” type of bacteria and provide various health benefits.

It is important that we consume these probiotics in food or supplement form, to help line our gut with good microorganisms.

Why probiotics are good for us

If our gut flora is unbalanced, we can easily become ill and have troubles digesting our food.

The good bacteria in probiotics are essential for a healthy digestive system, immune system and even aids in protecting us against allergies. It has also been linked to improving your mood, maintaining a healthy body weight, and enhancing nutrient absorption.

While our physical health has been linked to probiotics, there is also a lot of research on the link between probiotics and our mental health. Studies have shown that probiotics may play a significant role in anxiety, depression and stress.

How to include probiotics in our diets

Luckily for us, there are a lot of yummy foods that we can include in our diets, to keep our guts happy and help them do their jobs in a natural way.

Yoghurt, sauerkraut, kombucha and pickled vegetables are all excellent sources of probiotics, that are easily available these days. Try including them into your diet to see how it makes you feel, as listening to your body is ultimately what is important.

Taking probiotic supplements on a daily basis can also be extremely helpful when necessary.
